Ars Technica has a guide (http://arstechnica.com/reviews/003/gaming/nintendo/nintendo-1.html) to help revive your old NES. they claim you can do this with a few common tools and less than $20 of parts. you have to do some soldering and operating on the case which doesnt look all that great but it works

this is the end result. yes, its backwards. for you do it yourself-ers this might be ok, but id suggest sending it back to nintendo for warranty repair. i hear that the original NES has a lifetime warranty.

The coolest thing is that you can do this conversion for 4 controllers in the innards of an NES Four Score to prevent yourself from having to cut the original plugs off of the controllers. Even cooler is that the Four Score fits snugly into 2 5.25" drives! :D
