well i ride the train everyday to Cal State Northridge. today when it reached oxnard there was this old lady saying "ill give someone $5 if they can help me jumpstart my car"

she looked at me and asked again... then i said i didnt have a car (partially right but still a lie b/c my mom was comming to get me)

she asked the guys next to me, one of which just did the whole if i dont look at her i dont have to respond and the other guy said he didnt know how.

so when i get into my moms van i see that shes still asking people, so i tell my mom lets go.

when were leaving i told my mom what happened and my mom said that i should have at least said that i would have tried b/c my moms jump started cars many a times and she coulda done it for free.

augh!!!! im an ass... it was one of those moments where (if u believe in God) you think God is testing you, and i failed :(

ahhhhhhhhhh its just tearing me up!!!! :(

how come you didn't help her? you never gave the reason...

i think if there was reason to believe the person asking was being shady, it would make sense to refuse.

but if it was just an old lady, prolly shoulda helped her... :(

I'm always helping people who are in genuine need of assistance, you can always see the desperation in there faces. I can remember the elderly always locking there keys in there cars, I would always be thinking what if it was my grandmother. I would have the company service vehicle and always call it in as "no service" so I wouldn't have to charge them.

Then during my walk I just felt miserable :( it's harder with money to oblige. you dunno if it's a scam or whatever. i remember hearing on the news about these scams where ppl will dress in rags or dress down and go hang out and panhandle, then the camera crew would follow them home and you see they live in a nice house or whatever...and potentially take in some decent money. of course it's the news and it's hard to say if this is the rule or the exception, but i'd just hate to give someone cash to support some drug habit or just pay their bar tab or whatever.

of course you could go to the cashier and pay yourself to be sure it's really for gas n stuff. or if they ask for money for food, you could go in the store and buy a sandwich for them.

now...a jump start for an old lady is different. if there was reason to think it was shady, then better safe than sorry. but for the most part...

yup, you're a total a$$hole.

on another note...

when i was a freshmen in college a friend of mine had to do a sociallogical experiment. among other choices, he picked one where he had to be a bum for an hour and try to get money. he enlisted myself and another guy to go with him.

we started off at an interstate intersection on a "bad" side of town. we dressed in raggedy clothes and had signs like "please help, homeless, god bless etc"

in 30 minutes we got a couple of bucks.

change into better clothes and started just talking to folks that stopped and telling them we where college students from boston (i'm in NC). had a test on tuesday and needed to get back, but our van broke. can you help?

got about $10 in 30 minutes.

then we went to an interstate intersection on a "good" side of town. same college kid story. got like $30 in 30 minutes. talked to the other "bum" there for an interview. he was driving a honda and had a fat bank roll.

lessons learned:

1. dress nice and bum mony on the good side of town.
2. at least some of the "bums" are doing it as a career, and making fat cash.
3. middle class white women give the most money to 3 white college guys. hardley any money came from men or from other races.
4. the beer you by with bummed money tasts no better then beer you buy with earned money.

and another:

when i was in high school, i worked a wendys. it was at a big intersection. across the street was a bank. on payday, 2 "bums" came in. one would eat while the other held the sign in the intersection. after an hour, they would switch. an hour later, they both left with a fat wad of peoples paychecks.

not to say that all bums are scamming, but a lot are.

Yeah, I remember down in parts of the French Quarter and Canal St. the place was just crawling with career supplicants. Some of 'em made some pretty good money. Lots of drunken visitors spending cash freely.

well my answer was based on the fact that it was dark out (6:00pm), i was tired, and secondly,
a) i didnt have a car
b) my mom had her van, which i didnt think she even knew how to jump cars ( i do sorta, wouldnt really trust myself though)
c) i thought someone (aka almost everyone there drives except the students) would be able to help her

i didnt know my mom could jumpstart a car until she told me when we were nearly home... but i talked to that same lady today and she did get some help from one of the men on the train who was pretty much the last guy there... so i apologized this afternoon and she said everything was ok.

but i wasnt scared of her or anything, i was just really tired at the time

how did i ignore her pleas? i dont have my own car nor do i have a pair of jumper cables on me. i stated to her that i could do nothing about her plea. at least i showed the respect to respond to her, many guys were just walking by or just stood there and didnt look at her, older men btw.

Folks, I'd like to sing a song about the American dream.
About me, about you, about the way our American hearts beat way down
in the bottom of our chests. About that special feeling we get in the
cockles of our hearts, maybe below the cockles, maybe in the subcockle
area. Maybe in the liver. Maybe in the kidneys. Maybe even in the
colon, we don't know.

(Sung)
I'm just a regular Joe with a regular job.
I'm your average white suburbanite slob.
I like football and porno and books about war.
I got an average house with a nice hardwood floor.

My wife and my job, my kids and my car.
My feet on my table...and a cuban cigar.

But sometimes that just ain't enough to keep a man like me interested
no way No, I've gotta go out and have fun at someone else's expense
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

I drive really slow in the ultra-fast lane,
While people behind me are going insane.

I'm an *******
I'm an *******

I use public toilets and I piss on the seat,
I walk around in the summertime saying "How about this heat?"

I'm an *******
I'm an *******

Sometimes I park in handicapped spaces,
While handicapped people make handicapped faces.

I'm an *******
I'm an *******

Maybe I shouldn't be singing this song
Ranting and raving and carrying on
Maybe they're right when they tell me I'm wrong...

NAAAAH!

Know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna get myself a 1967 Cadillac El Dorado convertible, hot pink, with whaleskin hubcaps and all-leather cow interior and big brown baby seal eyes for headlights... yeah! And I'm gonna drive around in that baby at 115 miles per hour, getting 1 mile per gallon, suckin' down quarter pound cheeseburgers from McDonald's in the old-fashioned non-biodegradable styrofoam containers and when I'm done suckin' down those greaseball burgers I'm gonna wipe my mouth on the American Flag and then I'm gonna toss the styrofoam containers right out the side, and there ain't a goddamn thing anybody can do about it. You know why? Because we got the bombs, that's why Two words: Nuclear ****in' weapons, OK? Russia, Germany, Romania, they can have all the democracy they want...they can have a big democracy cakewalk right through the middle of Tienamen Square and it won't make a lick of difference, because we got the bombs, OK? John Wayne's not dead, he's frozen! And as soon as we find a cure for cancer, we're gonna thaw out the Duke and he's gonna be pretty pissed off. You know why? Have you ever taken a cold shower? Well, multiply that by 15 million times, that's how pissed off the Duke's gonna be. I'm gonna get the Duke and John Casavetti and Lee Marvin

and Sam Peckinpaw

and a case of whisky

and drive to Texas...(HEY, HEY HEY!>

Why don't you shut up and sing the song, pal?

:hmm: women should know this too...

as for not helping... yeah, sometimes you act first and think later. you realized later that it would have been easy and practically risk-free to help out... but your knee-jerk reaction is (quite rightly, given the society we live in) to cover your butt and back away. you don't hand out favors when you're constantly surrounded by strangers who could be scamming you or dangerous.

for example, i don't stop to help anyone who looks like they're having car trouble. not as a woman by myself, not when i have kids with me, not when i have kids at home that depend on me. i'm sure most of them are just people who need help, but i'm not taking any chances... covering my own butt is more important than sparing someone else a few minutes or hours of inconvenience.

as for money, i never buy the "i'm short a few dollars for gas" or for a train ticket or whatever. but i give change to bums on my way home from bars, because fuggit... he deserves a beer and a hamburger as much as i do.

molecularfire
02-16-2003, 01:28 PM
As a rule, I never give money to bums on the street. I will sometimes offer to buy them a burger or something like that... sad how often they give you a look of disgust and turn you down.

As for the gas thing... I've never known a single case where it wasn't a scam (look at the parking lot later and see if they guys is still cruising around looking for "gas money")

As for feeling bad about helping people out... I never feel bad for not helping someone out. Helping people out is a nice thing, but IMO, not an neccessity. If it were, we'd never be able to get any sleep with the billions of people starving in the world whose lives we could've saved by reinvesting our morning starbuck's money.

i think y'all are being too hard on hang10. for that matter, dude, you're being too hard on yourself.

practically every day, i see people i could help. sometimes, i do. i've driven people to get gas, pushed cars out of snowbanks, jump-started cars, etc etc.

but there's even more people who i just drive by. i try to help people when i can, and it does give you a good feeling inside when you help people out. there was one time in my life when i sure as hell needed help (my car stalled half-way into a busy street leaving a gas station. i was trying to push it back up the hill by myself and two ladies stopped and helped me. they saved my ass).

single-handedly, however, none of us can help everyone out there who needs help. you could spend all day, every day, trying to help everyone who is stranded along the road or whatever.

you just need to remember that all of us need help sometimes. and all of us should try to give help whenever we can. just don't become obsessed over this missed opportunity. other opportunities will come soon enough, and you can always take advantage of those.

yeah, the french quarter is basically non-stop panhandlers, mimes, musicians, etc. some of them are really good though.....it's nice to walk down the street and hear some delta bluesmen wailing away :)

i don't give money to people on the street though. i don't care who you are or what your story is -- i don't even make eye contact. there are organizations whose mission is to help people who are homeless, travelers whose vehicles are broken down, people who are hungry, etc. i support some of these organizations, and many people support other organizations. utilize these organizations. if you're not, i'm going to assume that either a) you're a professional, or b) you want the money for smack, not food.

I'll give them money if the street performers are good. I mean... I am getting some entertainment out of it. As for how they spend the money, I really don't care. It's their life, not mine. I have no illusions that I'm helping them. It's just fair that if I get some entertainment, I should pay them.
