Yeah, I just saw that too. I've heard this before, and worse. DeBeers controls like 85% of the world's diamonds, and the rest come from organized crime groups in Africa. I guess these syndicates use slave labor and are fond of randomly dismembering their laborers to keep them in line.

So when you buy a diamond, there is a 15% chance that you helped chop the arm off some poor African kid.

DeBeers isn't exactly the poster child for fair employment. Their workers are treated just slightly better than slaves.

With all the synthetic alternatives to diamonds, anyone who still demands a genuine "rare", "precious", "valuable", "forever" diamond is a sucker.

I just don't understand why people protest fur, but still let the diamond trade continue with no resistance.

No, your just lobbing off some poor ignorant peasants arm or leg. Geee, whats worse? The torture, maiming, raping, and killing of humans, or an animal being locked in a cage and then killed? I never understood PETA or people like that, they would rather save a rat than millions who are starving.

peta person 1: "down with the diamond cartel! they're lobbing off animals arms!"
peta person 2: "actually, they're lobbing off peoples arms"
peta person 1: "are they beating animals with their stubs?"
peta person 2: "probably"
peta person 1: "damn them!"

I'm guessing that's how it goes. and sadly, that's the way it works... probably.

but seriously, for some reason animals are more important than humans for some f*cked up reason. I don't get it myself.

Did you here about their protest sent to Yasser Arafat about the use of donkeys in suicide bombings. Apparently they have a problem with the inhumane treatment of the donkey. Talk about missing the point.

Diamonds are ok...I guess...
I dunno I've never owned one, and I really don't care if I ever do!
If I end up getting married, I don't want a big flashy ring w/ diamonds on it, I'd want something simple, but something that has my birthstone and the birthstone of the person I end up marrying....
Alot of times, I see these people with huge diamonds and I wonder, why and what's the point? They only attract attention to you and at times it could be the wrong attention!

and well yeah that commerical makes it seem that guys have to "buy" a women love w/ expensive gifts....:2far:

exactly. women who truly demand a diamond, and get upset if it's too small, are horrible people, period. talk about missing the point of LOVE AND MARRIAGE. maybe a guy with a good salary who doesn't want to buy you a diamond isn't a cheap bastid... maybe he just has an iota of imagination and can think of a million other things to do with the money (unlike you, twit.) i own lots of big-azz diamonds inherited from various family members (that happens when you're one of only three girls in the last two generations, when the previous generations had a BUNCH of women) - i let my mom wear them all. my wedding band is $220 worth of 14K gold with celtic knots and dragons on it. it's pretty and it means something special and i love it. the other thousands of dollars that could have been sunk into some stupid engagement ring were better spent on a trip to europe, superfluous musical instruments, and a house. they are pretty... but a prism hanging in a sunny window is a lot prettier, and bigger.

DeBeers is also the company that had the "two months salary" ad campaign to set the benchmark on how much you should spend on an engagement ring.

On behalf of guys everywhere - Thanks!

We don't?

Personally, I don't get what the big hype with diamonds are either. However, if my GF does, then shouldn't I do what will make her happy? I mean... I'm already going to get what I want from the marriage, what's the harm in sweeting the pot for her? Think of it this way... how many of you celebrate Valentines day?
