Anyone able to get the free processor upgrade option? I can't get it to work. :(

Whats the advantage of dell servers like these. If I build one myself, won't that be better. Plus, does someone have stackable coupons. Can someone help me determine why i should buy one of these, I see the big HOT sign and post by our good friend at gotapex, but need the extra boost to go cash in. Thanks

Anyone bought one of these? Does it have a AGP slot for a video card?

It's a server class machine, so no AGP slot - PCI only. If you need a server, this is the deal for you. If you want to use it as a desktop, you might be better off waiting for a Dimension deal.

It certainly is a hot deal for a server machine. These are built with the intention of running 24x7x365, so they are a little more 'heavy duty' than a desktop. They have better cooling & management features built in. Of course, you may or may not care about these features, but the 2x73GB drives alone make this a killer deal!

It's got an ATI Rage card on the MB w/ 8M ram. I figure with a decent PCI 3d card and a little more memory, it'd make a killer PC for a youngster or just a surfing machine. I agree...the drives make it a great deal!

Sounds like you've seen the inside of one of these. Could you tell me if it has sound capability integrated into the MB. I'm not looking for anything elaborate, just something so my aunt can hear her beloved "You've got mail" notification on AOL. :-)

Nope...you'll have to add a cheapo sound card or you may have one in your bit box.

If you want just a home PC, I advise you to not buy this server because, well... it is a server. :heh:

I think Jeffbx already summed this up nicely, but if you want a PC, either look for a Dimension deal or look at the refurbs. I have had a lot of luck with the refurbs (about 10 of them) so you might be better off going that way. Yeah, this thing will work as a home PC if you slap in a 'better' PCI vid card and cheesy sound card but it is not worth it. Not to mention IIRC these PowerEdge servers are LOUD. You can get a really good desktop for the same price and then pick up a 100+ GB HDD with the 8MB cache from the deals page... there are a ton of them these days.

If you buy this and try to use it as a workstation, you will only be frustrated by it. If you want a sweet file server or AD Domain controller for your SOHO... this server is for you. Heck, the PE1600SC with dual Xeons will run as a great light to medium duty database server too! Desktop is just a bad idea though.. :shake:

Picking up a better deal would be very hard to do with dell quality and the dell 1 year warrenty.

That dell system infomation link doesn't seem to work for me. Keeps on asking for a service tag, anyone know anyway around this?
