If so how many times? Ever the best man/maid(matron) of honor.
I gotta work on my speech for the reception. It's gonna be a long night and long friday
Any real suggestions will be welcome. :)

was in a few parties, was best man once.
one tip....if you wear a mic for the speech to be taped at the reception, don't mutter "sonofabitch" under your breath on the way to the podium.....
it makes for interesting conversation afterwards...:heh:

Two wedding parties. Once as best man. Both more than 10 years ago and both guys are still my best friends. It's wierd, though, that they both know each other (we all went to college togther) but aren't friends.
Note, keep the speech short and unless it's rock solid, avoid trying any jokes. The audience is usually very diverse and some either don't get it or will be offended by it. Keep it simple.

nope. from what i've seen, a simple toast of about a minute in lenght is just as appreciated (often MORE appreciated) than a long "i remember when soandso told me about whatsername" and blah blah blah. also, have fun, but don't get too drunk... you will be surprised at how many little tasks you will still need to complete, even late in the reception. if appropriate, keep the bride and/or groom from drinking too much... after intense stress, they are partying, it's the party of their life, so they are going to drink with poor judgement... but they really don't want their only memory to be of puking and passing out at 10 pm. they don't need to be able to talk clearly or walk straight, they just need to be able to make it to the hotel room and do some token banging.

I've been in several wedding parties, but never had to make a speech. Your toast doesn't need to be long. Just wish them a long and happy life together. If you have a good funny story, tell it but make sure it wouldn't give grandma a heart attack.

tell a joke first, everyone will laugh and the speech will be easier. do keep it short. here's one that's worked for me as well as a few other friends.
stand with the bride and groom, and have them both hold their hands out with palms facing the floor. ask the groom to place his hand on top of the brides. then have them turn a bit or whatever so that everyone can see. (you should be directing all of this over the mic). when everyone has seen, the punchline is "i just wanted you all to witness the last time that [groom's name]will have the upper hand in this relationship"
i used that and folks laughed like hell, especially the older married ones. before i told that i thanked the parents on both sides for the wedding. afteer that i wished the bride and groom a happy marriage etc etc. whole thing took about 2 minutes and was very well received.

Been to about 4 weddings. One of them was mine :P hehe.
I had to give a speech myself but I didn't prepare one. I just improvised it. It turned out pretty good rom what I hear. :)
Personally, I think that as long as it comes from the heart, you shouldN'T:D worry about saying something wrong.

huh? :D
My brother was the best man at my wedding. My brother is one who as been known to "indulge" so that was a little worrysome. My mom got him a book from the library on that talked all about how to be a best man. Prep before, things that might happen, how to write a speech. I read some of the jokes, and ended up using one of the jokes in the toast to my inlaws. The jokes in the book were very multi-generational and inoffensive.
I don't know the name of the book, but I would suggest a trip to your local library.

I'm afraid that with all my siblings, cousins and various friends, I have been in more weddings that one person can actually stomach-at last count (and I've sat here counting)it's probably 33 or 34-and that is only FIRST time marraiges..now my friends are all getting remarried-and guess what-this time I'm smart enough to say "no thanks-I stood up for you once, or I was ALREADY in a wedding for you"..good news is-my kids got good use out of my wedding attires (which all in all weren't too horribly ugly)for various degrees of playing dress up-and also for halloween. :)

I am going to be in a wedding of May of 2004 and I am the maid of honor, but luckily in my speech class this year we are going to learn how to write a cerimonal speech :-) so I will do just fine...I hope

I just went to a wedding...ugh...the speech was given by the grooms best friend who was from Alabama...let me tell you something...
For 25 minutes I swear, we sat and listened to him talk about southern food to Cousin Billy who was in the nursing home...I thought for a minute I heard Deliverance being played in the background (jk)....and for a minute there, I actually think he forgot why he was up there ...
Finally..it really all did fit in to his point at the end...but people began to fade & get antsy before he finished...
Do not make that mistake...
