Is there a way to send messages like AIM through a home network using solely the OS's installed on the computers. Just say my friend is in the other room on his comp and I want to send him a message from my comp, is there a prgram in windows to do that? I'm running XP and the other comp is running win98 SE.

here's what i do:
start>control panel>adminstrative tools>computer management
in the left panel, right click on computer management (local), then choose connect to another computer. from there you can either browse for the comp or type in it's address (for example if you wanted to connect to my computer whose name is harpo, you'd type "\\harpo")
once you're connected, right click on computer management in the left panel again, choose all tasks>send console message. you'll get a dialog box, type your message and hit send.
this can be great fun in labs! you can send one to yourself before you connect to another comp if you want to see what it will look like.
Net Send will only work on NT machines, not win98 nor winME

windows98 should have a program called winpopup.exe in the windows directory that will do the same thing as netsend but with a gui to make it easier. im not sure about winme

If you know the computer name you can ping it and it will give you the ip.
