I just got my new dell so now its time to load it up. So my question is, what software (apps, games whatever) do you feel is a must have on your pc?

first of all, wipe all that Dell stuff as well as XP Home. Put XP Pro or linux on it :) Linux you may wait a while though because of new hardware not having the latest drivers.
XP is garbage, but Pro is better than home.
All the apps i use on my "fast" machine are McAffee (So i can use Ms Outlook to read my mail), SSH, Java developers kit, my programming utils, and winamp. If you got good DVD software from dell (Happens, sometimes :)) Keep that too. and MS office i guess....

Personally I love XP, although I've only used Pro.
Anyway, what do you do/want to do with your laptop?
For anyone, I think I'd suggest:
- Norton Systemworks. Good for the virus protection
and the tools
- MS Office, IF you can afford the hefty pricetag.
(I hear that open office is good too if you don't want to
pay for MS office, but I haven't tried it)
- Winamp
- Whatever IM programs you use
- WinZip (XP has functionallity built in, but I don't think it's as good)
- Nero if you burn CD's
- CDex (www.sourceforge.net) if you rip CD's (legally rip them, I mean :)
- Quicken if you use that stuff
Those are the ones that get put on my computer IMMEDIATELY after I reformat.

Oh yeah I totally forget about DIVX codec! I have around 150GB worth of pr0n so I still don't know where to put them!
i'd go with linux (rh, debian, slackware, or some such) or freebsd, with gnome, windowmaker, kde seems pretty popular these days, gimp (if it's not included), opera, and whatever you like at freshmeat.net. i'm using gtk-gnutella for filesharing.

Thanks for the posts.
I am running XP Pro although I don't think Home would bother me that much. I think I have it pretty much loaded with the stuff I want. The things I must have are:
-Office (although I have not put it on yet)
-Visio -Photoshop
-Trillian
-Winamp
-DivX is a must for previously stated reasons ;)
-Norton Antivirus
-Quicken
I was just wondering if anyone else had any cool appz that I may not have thought of. I have tried to load CDex but I had issues when trying to install it, maybe I'll try again.

I got my Dell (Inspiron 2650) yesterday and it's a nicely built machine. I have couples of complains though:
1. No firewire
2. Heavier than Compaq
