compress files

When you compress files in win xp, what is actually going on. And what are the pros and cons of it?

its compressing the files similar to the way winzip or winrar does it. it just automatically decompresses it when you need to use it. the downsides are that it is much slower than just leaving it uncompressed. if you dont need to, i would suggest not using it

slower how? if it was a video file, is is just slower to open the file, or will it actually play slower as well?
