I ordered one of these this morning (thanks to this site) but upgraded to the 80gig harddrive for an extra $66.50. Now I need a sound card, any recommendations? I also tried to order the 18inch LCD monitor, but that deal is over.

I say just pick up the cheapest sound card you can find. Don't spend more than about $35.

I got in on the 18" monitor deal. 3 of them actually :). For me and my wife and her sister. Then, my wife suprised me with a 20"! yay!

best bang for the buck under $35 is the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! Dolby Digital 5.1. I have that with Logitech z-560's and it sounds great.

You can find it at newegg w/free shipping:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=57&manufactory=1137&DEPA=0&sortby=14&order=1

I hope that helps.

Newegg also has the Pine GF4 MX 440SE (PCI with 64MB) for $57 shipped. Combo that with the sound card listed above and a Kingston 512MB PC2700 RAM, you will have a pretty nice home desktop (not a gaming one though)!

With no AGP, sound, USB 2.0, graphics card, and only 128 megs RAM included, I can't help but think this isn't such a great deal. I think I'll hold off for one of the sub $400 Dimensions that include all that stuff.

A quick question to those who have ordered one of these systems:

I put in my purchase order on Saturday the 8th. My order is scheduled to ship on the 28th. Has anybody else checked to see when their order ships?

I also have a question based on Shmosley's post "With no AGP, sound, USB 2.0, graphics card, and only 128 megs RAM included, I can't help but think this isn't such a great deal" I know that I'm not too technical as to the hardware, but can't we us a PCI slot to take the place of the AGP slot. Am I wrong but the AGP slot is for a video card? If I see the need for a video card, something like the RADEON 7500 64MB PCI is about$69. Also I plan on adding 512meg DDRAM that I see advertised for about $69 and a sound card for $35. I agree, these upgrades raise the price $175 brings the price of this deal up to about $445. OOPS! I forgot the cost of an operating syster, for me, I already have XP full install. Isn't this still considered a hot deal even after these upgrades?

This system with PCI video card, sound card, and memory upgrades should be a good home system or server. I wanted to get this computer so I could do DVD burning and video editing but it doesn't have enough juice (only 250W). I have at least 1 more HD, one DVD-RW, one DVD-ROM, and an IDE RAID card to be installed. The 1600SC has more juice (450W) but it's too expensive for my wallet right now.

Dell rates their PS's on the min avg, instead of the peak like many manufacturers. That's why the 230w PS in the Dimension is fine for Radeon 9700 Pro's, which normally have problems with even Enermax 350w PS's.

FYI, Ram is very cheap right now and droppin. 512 is what you should have for XP. 1gig only adds about 5% to performance from what I've read.
No AGP is what killed this deal for me personally.

One thing you need to take into consideration with the RAM is that this is Registered DDR RAM (ECC). Unless you are willing to lose the 128MB stick that is put into the computer, you need to make sure you buy this type of ram. You can't mix and match it.

Yes but you should get new video card (PCI only), sound card, and more RAM. The built-in video card only comes with 8MB! I saw a 64MB PNY GF4 MX440SE @ TigetDirect for $49.99 after MIR + shipping. Like I posted above, newegg.com also has the 64MB PINE GF4 MX440SE for $57 with free shipping.

Things to know about the 600sc.

1: First of all the memory is registered ecc. You cant just go put your ddr from your desktop in it and hope it works. REG ECC memory isnt as cheap as your desktop memory.

2: The pci slots on the board are different than the ones in your desktop, they are pci2 3.3 volts. This means you have to buy the right card to make it work. Most newer sound blaster card will work on the sound card issue. The only nvidia video card I could get to work was the Apollo gf4 440 se listed here http://www.joytech.com/apoolo%20Geforce%204%20MX440%20SE%20DDR%20PCI.htm?prd_id=CGTS3TI2 (notice it has 2 notches I will get to that next.)

3: The thing you need to look at when getting your cards for this box is it has 2 notches in the connector area of the card. Like pictured here. http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=14-140-014-03.JPG/14-140-014-02.JPG/14-140-014-01.JPG/14-140-014-04.JPG

Got mine yesterday. Awesome server. Case is very spacious and isn't anywhere near loud. The 40GB hard drive is one of those fluid bearing drives so you can barely hear it. The only thing I'm dissapointed about is that the single 32-Bit PCI isn't like the average consumer PCI slots (nor are the 64-Bit slots backward compatible with the consumer pci cards) so my SCSI RAID card I just bought for this project has gone to waste.

Overall performance of the server is top knotch. The POST time is very short when compared to the boot process of a Compaq ProLiant. I swapped the 2.4GHz cpu for my desktop's 1.6GHz cpu. The system works fine with the lower end cpu.

To my suprise, I've been successful in installing Microsoft Windows Server 2003 RC2 with the default 128MB RAM (another 512MB ECC DDR ram I got off of eBay for $60 is currently in the mail). I was almost certain the system would of stopped dead in the middle of the install but it kept going. This is my first crack at playing with Server 2003 (it came with my Office 2003 Beta kit) and I'm pretty impressed with it. Setting up Server Roles like DHCP, DNS, FTP, Windows/NFS file sharing, etc. are all automated with a single program.

My overall opinion of the server is that I've gotten plenty more out of the system already than the money I put into it. I'm glad that I jumped in on this deal.

My server is sitting on a shelf in the box. I'm still not sure if I should take it for myself or resell it to one of my clients for a nice markup.

Hmmm, decisions decisions.

I ordered mine on the 7th and it arrived Monday.

The Dell website is always behind.... once it says "on way to carrier" expect it soon. The website says to check back for a tracking # but twice now I get my server before that happens. (I have bought 4 over the last 4 months). It works out nice, buy it, use it for 2 months, sell it at a profit on Ebay, and buy a new one from Dell. I have went from a 1.1G P3 to a 2.4G P4 doing that.

Does anyone recommend which memory, sound card, modem and video card? I added a Soundblaster DI5633 call waiting modem, but the call waiting part won't work with XP but the surf speed is amazing. Any recommendations for a call waiting modem that will work with XP. I wanted to get the Sound Blaster Live! Dolby Digital 5.1 for $33 at Newegg but the decription said "Open half-length PCI 2.1 complaint slot". Does anyone know if this sound card will fit what does half-length mean? I think I already used the half slot for the modem. ALSO what are peoples impressions of this computer? My impression so far is that it is quiet, at least compaired to my old Compaq and also it surfs the net at an amazing speed, though I don't know if that is the computer or the modem.

Have you tried Soundblaster card yet, I thought it might not fit in the upper slots, I used the half slot for the modem. ALSO have you also tried the memory, can you confirm it was recognized by the computer? FINALY, is that modem call waiting, my Soundblaster modem is call waiting but won't work with XP even though I have the newer drivers.

Hi KCrilly,

It seems you have a lot of knowledge about the 600SC. Nice computer, but I agree -- one definitely needs to be aware of the pertinent details to upgrade this machine as you outlined above. I still have mine and I'd like to add a dual monitor PCI card. I found 2 that look good. They both appear to be 3.3 volts with the additional notch in the board connector but none of the manufacturers seem to publish specs on voltage or I just can't find them. Verification by an image photograph may not always be correct so I'm just not absolutely sure about the voltage.

These are the 2 cards I am considering. Would you know whether these cards work or not? Any advice for successful installation as I know it won't be as easy as "plug 'n play" !? -- It's going to be plug it in and expect a lot more work!

1. PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 / 256MB DDR / PCI / Dual VGA / TV Out / Video Card

2. Diamond Stealth Radeon 9250 / 256MB DDR / PCI / DVI / TV-Out / Video Card

Also, I have had problems with the 1st USB port on this computer since I purchased. Never worked. And, the CD ROM drive is either defective as it "hangs" when accessed or it just doesn't agree with Windows XP Professional. Any advice here?

Thanks!
