there is something cops in some states use now called VG2 to detect that a radar detector is in use. the higher-end radar detectors now feature VG2 cloaking, which detects when cops are detecting your radar detector. i have been told that the legality of radar detectors varies by state. now all cops need is a detector that detects that you are detecting that they are detecting your radar detector. so ultimately consumers would then need a detector that detects that cops are detecting that you are detecting that they are detecting your radar detector. easy, huh? http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Spend the extra money and get a Valentine One. There is no substitute.

NSX is correct! I have owned several detectors over the years and nothing comes close to the Valentine One. Yes, it's expensive, but, if your ability to drive is important to you, then save up for it.

I totally agree. I own a Uniden, which retailed for $299 (I paid much less) and still it is a piece of crap. A guy who works for me just bought a Valentine One and I've seen it in action, there's nothing like it. It tracks up to 8 separate signals - all bands of radar and laser. Also, it has arrow indicators to tell you the direction in which the signal originates. i.e., if you're driving in downtown and it's going off but pointing directly left or right, it's a building security system, or automatic door. It gives great detection ranges on radar, and as good as you can get on laser, although that's tough to beat.

costly but worth every penny.

Do yourself a favor: save your money and buy a dictionary/spelling-checker.

I have a Uniden which has saved my butt a few times but I agree with everyone else, Valentine makes the best.

Valentine only sells them direct from their website.

They are expensive, but worth it. Every independent detector test places them first. Additionally, they offer upgrades; if a newer version comes out you can send yours back to get an update at a significant discount. The remote display is also excellent for stealth operation.

Think of the cost this way: you may pay an extra $100-200 for it vs. a cheaper unit, but a single ticket will probably cost you more than that.

There's also a 30-day money-back guarantee. They're a first-class operation.

P.P.S.: How about radar. I think you'll have some problems getting your hands on a rador detector. I hear they're phasing those out.

How about radar blockers, or scramblers? I saw one in a catalog the other day and was just curious whether or not they worked, and of course whether or not they were legal. Anyone?

As regards the legality of radar scramblers, look at this link from valentine one's own web site and judge for yourself.

i agree with Valentine One being the best. im shooting myself in the foot for it now. Ive gotten two tickets even though my detector is 250 dollars. I have a high end escort ... i think its model 7200 or something and its definitely saved me 99% of the time but its that 1% that will get you busted and can be cut reduced by a Valentine One. I would say Valentine one are 99.5% effective and most others are 94-99.

The real problem is (in my opinion) the trust issue with the driver and the detector. Lets say detector a and detector b will signal equally in the presense of an actual cop who is scanning... If detector "a" has a lot of false alarms and detector "b" has very very few, I would react very strongly and very fast to a warning of detector "b" but I would not panic very much if "a" went off because it is known to report a cop every time a big 18 wheeler passes or I pass by some automatic doors.

Point is that its not just the ability of a radar detector to identify a cop who is scanning but it is also the frequency of false alarms a given detector makes. That can and WILL make you lose trust, slow down your reaction, and inevitably cause you to get a citation. Hope this helps anyone who was curious as to what to look for when buying. Valentine One is simply the best; spend extra now and save your butt later.

I have a better radar detector than the Valentine. It's called: speed limit, eyes, and luck http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

I see the speed limit, ignore it, then i look for cop cars & speed trap areas. Then I drive accordingly. And of course, luck always helps :P

oh, and i haven't gotten a speeding ticket yet (4+ years now)

Can someone put a link from a site that did ratings for both the valentine and the beltronic 980? Both have 360 degree support. Thanks.

Car and Driver magazine is the only place that regularly does detector comparison tests and the last one they did was several years ago. The Valentine One won, but you have to consider what law enforcement is using in your area. NOTHING is effective if the cops are using LASER...the LASER beam simply does not spread or scatter as does RADAR. The only time a detector will alert to LASER is by pure, unadulterated dumb luck or when you have just been clocked (and then its too late). You have a much better chance detecting RADAR use. If your cops are using LASER or VASCAR(no beams to detect), save your $. If they are using RADAR (3 bands...X, K, KA), buy something that tests out well as to them. Save your $ as to LASER detection, it just doesn"t work. If you go to the V-1 website and read carefully, Mr. Valentine pretty much admits this. http://www.valentine1.com/moreinfo/Laser.asp

dgoldblatt is correct. They only sell direct. You might be able to find some deals on eBay. I sold my three year old Valentine One for $360. Then used that money to buy a new Valentine One for $399. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

The V1's carry a very good resale value... but if $30 is good savings... then it's worth a shot...

No offense, but although you haven't gotten any tickets, I don't see how you could see a speed trap before it sees you. I think luck out a lot more than eyes, at least for me.

Valentine One's are awesome, but having an attorney with you in court is even better when you've been caught speeding. Email me if you want to find out how to get this service and pay only like 50 cents a day. No joke!

Or you could just drive under 25+ the speed limit so you dont get reckless driving and thrown in jail. The radar helps to warn you but you could still get caught. Many detector companies will offor to refund your first ticket.

You sure that you'll be able to fill out your name and information correctly on the order form with that type of grammar? Better to just get it from a store and save yourself the embarrasment and other possible consequences.

First of all, nothing beats the valentine 1. 2nd of all, if you don't have the money, I got an bel thats normally 160 bucks brand new for 90 off ebay. Best investment of my life. It gives ample warning, up to a mile and a half in some cases. Make sure you get one that tells you which band of radar it is. I know around here, all the local popos use K band radar only. Highway patrol uses Ka band. The only time my detector falses is on x band so I've learned to ignore the sound it makes on x and brake for all K and Ka. The only time K falses is if a grocery store has k band radar, which is very few, and I'm in the parking lot. Another useful feature you want is strength. My detector has a bar that as you get closer it gets stronger...so if you think its false you slow down a bit for bar 1..if it increases...you brake hard. Before I had a detector I had 3 speeding tickets. In the 3 years I've had one..I had one because the cop paced me..but it got thrown out in court. So basically its saved my ass everytime.

actually most higher end detectors will accomodate for the fact that x band is rarely used by cops anymore. I have an escort/passport/whatever and i set mine to NoX (No X band). It works great for me and means that my detector is quiet 99.99% of the time except in that rare occurence where the Kroger Supermarket is using freakin K band for their automatic doors. Other than that its great. I still want a valentine one though http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/frown.gif
