xp indexing service

Hey,
Whenever i use the search command on my windows xp pro box, it hangs up. I have to kill the process. I cant figure out the problem, but have been trying other approaches. It seems as if anytime i do anything with the Indexing service, it hangs as well. my event manager doesnt really have anything to say about it. i get this error frequently, but cant really figure out whats going on:

Windows saved user *\rajat banerjee registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.


Comes up about every day. I do not know if these two are correlated, but both definitely started when i started using BootVis. I wouldnt really recommend it!

I would like a way to clear out all the catalog files created by indexing service, but i am hesitant to do so.

Anyway, before i wipe the machine and reinstall, does anyone have any smart ideas? THanks

ps: i know it is indexing service, because when i turn off "search with indexing service", the searches run fine. They are just too damn slow that way. I'm talking like 5 minutes per search.

Found this with google:

1. back up the directory c:\windows\srchasst to somewhere safe (assuming c: is your boot disk and XP is installed to the windows directory)

2. Run Service Pack 1 (if you can't download it, there is often a copy on the cover disk of many PC magazines)

3. If the search function does not repair, then copy the directory from step 1 back and windows will complain that the files are pre service pack 1 and that you need to re run the service pack.

4. if you were requsted to re run the SP the do

5. if the search function is STILL not working, find a friend with a copy of windows XP (same version as you) installed and copy thei srchasst directory over yours.

6. re run service pack 1

You could also maybe try sfc /scannow from the command line and see what comes up.

No Worky :( I think the problem is that SP1 is not around anymore, they have SP1a , which you are not supposed to install over SP1 regular. I did it anyway, but it never re-requested me to run the SP1.

DO you remember what you typed as your google search terms? THanks!

Backup all of your stuff.. Then run Format c: /s. Drop in an XP Cd and click next, next, next, next, finish.

I guarantee you this will fix your prob! :)
