I looked at some plasma sets a while back and came across the following info for the
42pd3 (it is the consumer version of Panasonic TH-42PHD5UY)
difference explained (http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv/panasonic-pt42pd3p.html)
both are basically the same but one is for businesses and the other for consumers (stand is included). the 9hd5uy is much cheaper, about $3500 out the door. You can't get on the tuner but beware, not much programming over air is available for the tuner anyway (my understanding is that you also need to purchase an actual antenna to take advantage of it)
comparison shop (http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatvprices/plasmadisplays-pan.html)
at any rate, the bottom line is do ur research before u buy, especially such big ticket items

So is this unit Enhanced Definition TV like the Gateway TV at $2999 or real Plasma TV like the Philips units that I see at BestBuy?
Same 852x480 resolution, much higher quality than the Gateway.

I appreciate your post on the subject ... I'm looking for a flat tv too.
What do you guys think about the pricing at www.drprojector.com?
There is the panasonic TH-42PHD5UY with HDTV res of 1024x768 ... $4849.79
link to 42" panasonic (http://www.drprojector.com/Itemdesc.asp?dr=plasma&ic=TH42PHD5UY&Cc=&)
I'd welcome any comments on drplasma.com that you might have, since I'm thinking about buying from them.
Yes, with a $400 difference, I'd go with the 42PHD version as well.
However, minimum HDTV resolution is 720p, which translates to 1280x720. 1024x768 is fudging it a bit.

1024x768 sounds like a 4:3 resolution, yet it is being marketed as a 16:9 screen. What gives?

The pixels on it and the 1024x768 based NEC 42" plasma are non-square. Pretty common.
