Hey all, I am trying to do some editing of some videos of surgery that we do here in our clinic, and I having some trouble importing the files. Basically in the operating room the surgeries are being recorded directly onto a DVD-R as mpeg2. I can pop it into both my PC and Mac DVD players and I can view it no problem. However when I try to import it, it does not recognize any of the files.

Right now the video is split into .bup, .ifo, and .vob files. Do I need to merge these files in order to import it? I am using Final Cut Pro 3 which recognizes Mpeg2.

Thanks in advance.

If you have a program like Adobe Premiere you should be able to input all the files and then edit it and then resave them as whatever format they are in. If I am mistaken, which is most likely the case, you will probably have to convert the .vob files into another format such as .mpeg and then edit it that way.

I have limited experience in this field, but that's my take on it.

.VOB files are container files for the audio, video, subtitles, etc. I don't believe FCP3 or Premiere can read them directly. You are going to need to demux the DVD into its audio and video components.

Try this tool (http://denisx.dyndns.org/extractor/) on your Mac. :)

Hey lilg thanks for your reply. I have tried it on Premiere and it doesn't recognize it either. I think you are right on about the files needed to be converted to mpeg format. I will just have to figure out what program will do that for me

It's quite alright to talk about DivX because it is a legal media format that has become somewhat standardized. As long as you don't mention what the file is or how you obtained it, everything should be just fine. For all we know, it's a home movie that you transferred to your PC, right? ;)

I'm pretty sure that as long as you have the DivX codec installed, Premier will recognize the file format when you import. You could also use VirtualDub if all you need to do is crop/combine video.

if you have the codec, i know you can encode premiere projects into divx (mpeg4), but i dunno if u can do the opposite. I believe you can, but I've never tried....

if it does work..
just encode the dvd into mpeg-4

and then bring it into premiere.

Hmm I couldn't get that app to work sequiro. It extracted the files, but it kept them as .vbo files. I found an app on the PC that converts .vbo to .avi, but it was taking forever so I stopped. I talked to the support line at Adobe and they said that Premiere is supposed to be able to read those types of files, but since it was only the first level of support I doubt the guy knew what the hell he was talking about. At any rate, I am not sure what else to do at this moment. If I figure anything out, I will post it in this thread.

Thanks for your help.
