hooking up Dell laptop to my Panny 47"

I'd like to watch SVCD, but can only get them to play on my laptop. It has S-video, so I hook it up to the TV, but after playing w/ monitor properties, clone, 800x600, etc., the image on the TV is still pixellated, a bit blurry, and in B/W. I'm just learning on pc's (I've been a mac guy for 10 years), so is there anything else I should try? If anyone can lead me step by step, I'd sure appreciate it. BTW, it's a Dell 8200 Inspiron laptop, 32Mb vid card, Win XP home. Thanks.

most likely, it'll still be pixelated on the tv.

or perhaps, it's also the quality of the svcd?

I pretty sure the picture quality shouldn't be this bad. The quality of the SVCD is pretty good.
