I am thinking of getting a Sony DRU-500A that I would use for system backups and making copies of a few of my DVD movies for archival purposes only of course. I know it would work fine for system backups but what about copying commercial DVD movies. Would the DRU-500A drive and X-copy combo do the job or is there a format problem. I have no idea what format they use to create DVD movies. Is there anybody out there making successful archival copies of their DVD movies and if you are, what drive and software do you use? I would hate to buy the drive only to find out it would not do what I want. I suppose I could take it back if it didn't work but it would be nice to know before going through all that trouble, if I'm wasting my time or not. Any advice would be appreciated.:(

I use DVD X-copy and Pioneer DRV-A05 to make archival DVDs in DVD-R format. Those play fine in my DVD-ROMs and JVC DVD player.
