Looking for the best wireless router/AP out there. It must support PPPoE for my dsl account. I have a Linksys Cable/DSL router and a WAP11. I think they SUCK!!!
My signal keeps dropping out and I can't get the router to reconnect/redial my PPPoE account after a timeout.
I was thinking of either a Netgear or D-Link product. One of my notebooks has integrated 802.11b so anything abobe that xxx.11a/g is a waste...xxx.11b is fine enough.

Do you really want the best, or do you want an affordable one? The best (IMHO) would be a wired gateway with a wireless Cisco access point, but that'll set you back about $500. What's your budget?

I'm doing quite well with the Netgear MR814 Router/Wap. I have had no issues with it and I do believe it supports PPPOE.
It is also prolly one of the best priced units out there.

i've used dlink, smc, and netgear.
I think the smc has the strongest signal, but the UI sucks. Dlink and netgear had lower signal.

I think I'll take a look at the Netgear. It's advertised as having an enhanced signal for better sinal strength.
Those of you on SBC dsl with Netgear reouter/ap...have you been able to redial your PPPoE connections? My conection seems to timeout after 4 hours of inactivity.

I'm running Netgear MR814 too. Never experience any drop-off and very affordable. It's been on for months and no problem.

Ok...So I bought the MR814... After a few hours full of hassle I'm up and running
I couldn't get the wireless to access the internet...direct wire only. I had to check an authentication option on my Wireless Networking connection properties for the routers DHCP to issue me a NAT address.
I'll give it a few days to see if it will fit my needs.

I use the Siemens 2624 with print server and I have no problem connecting to the internet. I use the USR2210 PC card in my Dell laptop.

It's been pretty good. Although, my PPPoE account still gets diconnected. Still, the only solution to restablish the connection is to power cycle the modem.....I just don't get it....

I've got one Wireless router from Dell, it stinks. security features are very lacking.. if you want to block ports, you can block all.. or just the standard http fttp and stuff like that.. you can't block a specific one.. which i thought really sucked!
I also have the SMC 7004AWBR (i think thats the model).. I think its alright.. Much better than the Dell. I haven't tried the Netgear wireless ones though.
and for wireless cards, I'm using the Dell Truemobile one, which is essentially the Agere Systems Orinoco Gold 802.11b.

Hey... try setting your "idle timeout" to 176 minutes.
Also... were you on "Ameritech" before they switched over to SBC Global? If so, then change your Login name to "yourname@static_ameritech.net". I had the same problem that you are having until I did those things.
Also... here is a good resource for SBC Global/Ameritech DSL issues: http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/ilec,am

No..this isn't an existing account. It's a new account. I'm switching over from Comcast cable internet.
The odd thing is that sometimes my connection stays alive for 24 hours, other times it goes dead in 4 hours. When I try to reconnect from the Netgear Status page, it just continuously tried to connect without success. The only thing that works is power-cycling the modem.

1st wireless network for me.
Set up the linksys wireless G network at work. Everything seems to be good. Will turn on encription and change all the names and addresses and hopefully still have a functioning 3-4 rig network this week.
I kinda want to get the same set up for home now that I see how easy and fast the set up is.
Linksys = good stuff = cisco = might not be good for long.

I live in the SF Bay Area - east bay.
Listing the DNS addresses is the next thing I was goinig to try.
I think that IPCONFIG from the command line will give me al the info I need.
I'll give it a whirl when I get home from work tonight.

You can also try these...
Primary 198.6.1.5 and
Secondary 198.6.1.4
The problem is that those are specifically for San Francisco. I live in the Bay Area and there are littraly 100's of DNS severs serving 9+ counties in the SF Bay Area.

You think Linksys is going to drag Cisco down?
