View Full Version : Why does Nero slow down my 2000 PC a lot... but not my 98 PC???

Whenever I use Nero to burn discs on either of the two Windows2000 PCs that I use, it REALLY slows things down.
On my Windows98 PC downstairs, it runs like a champ and has no noticable ill-effects on performance.
What gives?
Dave.

I believe Dave_7 is referring to the slowdown that occurs WHILE a CD is being burned with Nero.
I have actually experienced this same phenomenon and still cannot figure it out. The only thing that I can think of is that my CD-RW drive is not able to run in DMA mode.

Well, wouldn't you know it...
I began to delve into the reasons why I am be getting massive slowdown when burning a CD with Nero - actually, it's with any burning software.
I knew that my CD-RW drive was using PIO mode instead of DMA mode (even though I had selected DMA mode if available as the option for my IDE channel controller), yet I didn't know how to work around the problem. I knew that the drive supports DMA, so it was really irking me that I couldn't get it to work right.
The solution was to simply remove the IDE channel controller that my optical drive was on (Second IDE channel) and then reboot my system. Windows then discovered new hardware (new CD-RW drive, new Second IDE channel) and it was automatically enabled in DMA mode.
So, it seems that for whatever reason, Windows XP can't seem to get this right when you first install the OS.
If you need any help with this (checking the DMA options, etc), let me know.
I'm very happy that I was able to get this figured out. It has been bugging me for the longest time and I just dealt with it. I am actually listening to some MP3s while burning a CD without any skipping! :P

I generally don't to ANYTHING while I'm burning CD's. I guess my paranoia comes from the old days with my 2x burner that would guarantee you a coaster if you even touched the system while a cd burned for 45 minutes.
