i was having problems with my lite-on CD-RW, so i e-mailed tech support and they e-mailed me a firmware update. after i did that, my computer stopped reading the CD-RW and now my DVD-rom acts all funky. anyone know what's going on? lite-on told me to send it back to my reseller (circuit city) and get a replacement. hm.

I agree, if you're having issues and it's relatively new, just take it back to CC and swap it.
Sounds like either you botched the firmware upgrade, or they sent you the wrong one.

does last september mean relatively new?

Here's what you do. Go down to CC, buy a new identical one, head out to your car, stick the bad one in the box and return it as defective.
You can also mention that you just got one as a present so you won't be exchanging it, just returning it.
And no, don't feel like your scamming, cuz you're just accomplishing the same thing the tech support guy told you to do but in a creative way.

lite-on's the one that told me to send it back. i gave them the S/N and everything and they probably figure the model is old anyhow. do you think printing out the e-mail lite-on sent me would help?

Possibly. I guess you're saying that CC don't sell that model anymore? Also, if anything, you should be sending it to lite on for a replacement under warranty.
