So what is the latest greatest way to rip CD's? (that you own of course) I am currently ripping cd's to mp3 at 192kbps but I kind of remember hearing that there is a new format to rip em at near cd quality.
Thanks---

I'm still ripping with audiograbber at 128bit or better. I personally don't see a huge impact other than on my file sizes at a higher rate.
i use easy cd extractor at 192kb/s

If you listen to music that has very high treble and very low base at the same time...you will. Low bitrate mp3s tend to cut the tops and bottoms off music.
I've heard a distinct and considerable difference between the vbr mp3s I've made with LAME and the internet 128kbps mp3s I've downloaded

EAC using LAME with the -r3mix settings for high quality VBR mp3s. (all I listen to in my car now)

I agree too...thats actually why i was asking. I have a decent HT system and a pretty nice system in my truck and i can totally tell a difference. You might not be able to tell with a 4" full range but listen to mp3's at 128 through a 4way component system and you are like...damn. I need my cd's.

Is vbr now widely accepted? Do almost all players (car players, discman, DVD players) read vbr encodings?
Or has it always been... and I am just nuts?
Just curious (about the first question).
Dave.

Yes. This was a big issue for me when I upgraded my car audio last fall. All the models I researched supported VBR. I can't talk to the $40 discman-like MP3-CD players, but all the car decks worth owning (Sony, JVC(mine), Kenwood, Pioneer, etc) supported Variable Bir Rates and constant bit rates up to the 300's.

VBR did not used to be as widely accepted as it is today. It's more of a software thing (the right algorithm) than a hardware thing, and more and more manufacturers are including the ability now.
