View Full Version : So how (why) is Win2k going to be worse for games than WinXP?

Is it DirectX issues? What is the deal? Hardware issues?

Or am I just spouting nonsense? Will games work just as well on Win2k as WinXP?

Or some will and others won't?

Any ideas anyone?

I suppose... didn't know if it was a hardware interaction problem with the OS and the video cards, or not... or what.

Reason being... if someone wants me to support their PC, I'd rather them use Windows2000. BUT... if gaming is going to be DRAMATICALLY affected (adversely)... then maybe I'd have them go with XP and just deal with it.

Or is this an imaginary problem? I guess I'm really looking to see if someone has stacked them up side-by-side and was able to say, "Yep... Windows2000 really lags" or something like that or "Well, there seems to be no difference."

Ya dig?

WinXP is basically Win2k with a funkier, colorful interface.

WinXP has the compatibility updates and more modes built in.

That said I haven't seen any difference running games in either OS.

So far I haven't had any games that wouldn't run on WinXP. I used to run Win2K and had some problems with a couple games and programs. I don't remember which ones had problems, because I stopped using Win2K quite a while ago.

With current service packs and DX9a(or8), Win2000 and WinXP are nearly identical. I currently run Win2000 on my P3 and WinXP on my P4. Both run all games fine. In fact, because of the reduced overhead, some games that require large amounts of memory (>512) will run better on Win2k.

I think a very telling stat is that of the top 20 3dmark scores, 15 of them are WinXP. If there was a preformance hit with XP all those hardcore people wouldnt use it.

It's kinda selfish of you to tell someone to use a certain OS just cuz you prefer that one to support, man!!

Seriously though, if it's for home use etc... definitely go with XP. It's newer, prettier, and is documented in general to work better under most "home" situations.

Hey! Eat it! I know you're just razzin' me. I'm sure most of you can appreciate this...

I just really got tired of the people I know getting impatient with my FREE troubleshooting efforts on PCs that I didn't configure yet they managed to foul them up.

I just said, "enough". You want my help... you buy what I say and configure it my way.

It was either that... or find new friends.

Ahh... the life of a techie.

not much difference in supporting 2000 or XP, except that XP has a restore function, making it a little more idiot proof. So if your friend is an idiot, go with XP.
