View Full Version : Memory heat spreaders
was just wondering... is it really a waste of money to get ram with memory heat spreaders? is there even a signifacant performance boost?... specifically i'm talking about the OCZ PC2700 CL2 ram. I'm trying to decide if i should even bother with the ram that has heatsinks or not.
if i do not go with OCZ.. i may go with kingston... anybody know anythign about kingston? good/bad? perfomance compared to crucial?
i also have a set of Thermaltake copper heat spreaders.. so i also wonder if anybody knows if its double sided ram or not.
TIA :) :D

From what I've read, heat spreaders do nothing for memory. I think it's because the circuits are way too close (on the micrometer scale), so speeds above a certain point would produce heat near the PCB that would not reach the heat spreader before that heat fried the lower part of the chip.

kingston is a VERY reliable brand. about as good as crucial. Its just that crucial has been usin micron chips (well, theyre both from the same comany), and they have a solid rep.
Im using a PC2700 DDR333 512MB nonECC KIngston RAM and theyre very stable at 333MHz. No, they dont have any heatsinks. Ive used Kingston RAM before with PC133 SDRAM and theyve used infineon chips. SOmetimes they even use micron.
OCZ i dont trust. theyre a small outfit, they just hand-select fast RAM and overclock it. WIth crucial or Kingston, there is uniformity and evenness of their RAM - ANY module you get, you KNOW theyre going to work at those speeds and then some. plus they got uncovered with some scam awhile back.
Plus kingston has LIFETIME WARRANTY. LIFETIME!

Anyone have any experience with Kingston's HyperX memory? NewEgg has the HyperX for about the same price as the Crucial, and cheaper than the Corsair. I've always thought of Kingston as reliable budget memory, but the specs on the HyperX are impressive...
