:heh: so my dad cannot understand computers, and will go on very long rants about how the evil techies just make things too complicated... and since i'm a techie, he makes me his own personal comp support. so anyway, we're talking via AIM (which he knows how to respond, but not initiate), and suddenly:

d: Hi there, I lost the box to speak with you.
d: I hear your bell, but I cannot find you on my desktop.

:P he's managed to move the window halfway off the screen, and thus can't "find" it. so i help him move it back onto the screen(over the phone), and man, was he grateful! it was like i'd found a cure for the cold or something, he was so thrilled with my "tech skills". :heh: it's hilarious how much help lusers need sometimes!

it would work on modem...but ip address can change every time he dials in...
what...you're gonna ask him to give you his ip address????
hehe
unless you write a quickie script that he can just double click that'll send you an e-mail of his ip address.

oh, and if he has windows XP....you could always remote connect.....not even have to install vnc....

In my opinion, Remote Desktop or Remote Assistance is flaky. Took me a while to connect to a computer right beside mine via RD.

yeah, that's my big fear... imagine it, w/even the simplest method of finding the IP:

m: "okay, dad, look for the little green and white icon on the bottom right"
d: "what icon? i don't see it!! AAACCKK!"
m: "hover your mouse over.."
d: "hover? i don't get it! how do i hover my mouse? AAAACCCKK!"
m: "tell me what numbers show up"
d: "which ones? i can't read it, it's too small!"
m: "..." *sound of me whacking head against desk*

:heh:

Man, with VNC, even going from my laptop to the desktop across the room, it drags and looks horrid and is slow. :(

after my mother installed and turned on zone alarm with FULL protection, my parents couldn't view a boatload of pages.

So i had my father install VNC onto the computer so i could remotely access it. They are in NJ. I'm in Southern California. Despite the fact both myself and my parents were on broadband, the VNC was slow.

It took me about 10 minutes of slowly working with the VNC to configure zonealarm properly. Now, i know that sounds like a long time, but i swear that walking through my parents, over the phone, on how to fix a computer is near IMPOSSIBLE.

I give VNC a big thumbs up!

If you guys want to speed up VNC, make sure that:

1) You have the latest version
2) Make sure you drop the colors on the screen to 256. This alone will make it MUCH faster.
3) Try to match resolutions or at least have your machine (the control) have a higher resolution.

I us VNC and find that dropping down the number of colors helps BIG TIME. Also, if you don't have fancy wallpaper, it helps too.

Yep best way to speed up VNC is to hit the options button before you connect and click on "restrict pixels to 8-bits (for slow networks)". This will GREATLY speed up your connection.

VNC is great, I use it to support about 50 client machines over a WAN connection at another plant. Without it I would be driving 3 hours there and 3 hours back each time one of them had a problem. :)
