I have a Pioneer DVR-105 and I use Ritek unbranded DVD-R media and have not yet come across a standalone player than the discs wouldn't work in.

I'm a big fan of -R/-RW, just make sure you get good quality media. As far as copying DVD's goes, the major problem is the fact that most DVD's are double layered discs, so its either split the copy on to two discs or recompress the video so it can fit on one disc. There are many programs for doing stuff with dvd's. For copying I use DVD Decrypter.

I use DVD X Copy to make back up along with my rebadged Pioneer DVR-105. With double layer discs, I have to use 2 discs.

DVD2ONE makes good DVD-5 (single layer) backups of DVD-9 (dual layer) discs by stripping out extra features and/or recompressing the data. It's also about 100K and is faster than any other method I've tried by a substantial amount.
