View Full Version : what mp3 player do you recommend?
I'm shopping for a 128mb or 256mb portable mp3 player. i would prefer something with decent sound quality and small in size. I guess i could get something that has a memory slot, but that would just make it bigger. Besides the 128mb MuVo, what else do you all suggest?
My maximum price is about $130.00.

The iRiver iFP-180T is a very nice unit. It goes for $139 at buy.com.

Ever consider MD? They are pretty cool, have re-usable discs and are about as small as some mp3 players.

Been looking at MD's for a while. I like the two new ones they have out now. The 610 and 810 which go for $200 and $270 respectively. They both have am/fm/weatherband tuners (the tuner is in the remote I think) which all the other ones didn't have except for the 755 model. The 610 uses USB 1.1 and the 810 uses USB 2.0.
i currently have a minidisc player that i'm putting up for sale. it's the sony netmd n505. take a look in the for sale forums. i love it, but it's still to big! LOL. i'm getting real picky, i know, but i wanted something smaller than the minidisc player

I have one from here (http://www.frontierlabs.com/) and think it is great. It uses compact flash but is still pretty small and comes in at your price point even after you factor in the flash card.
Pros:
Sounds great
Works great
small form factor - smaller than a deck of cards.
Good performance time per set of batteries
Fairly cheap
DOES NOT REQUIRE ANY ADDITIONAL OR COPY PROTECTION SOFTWARE
Cons:
No rechargable batteries
No built in radio tuner
No built in clock
As you can tell from the list my most important consideration is the software. I've got plenty of crap in my task bar as it is thank you very much. The fact that this device does not require me to use anyone else's jukebox software was a makor selling point. Just plug it into the usb port and drag and drop your music from Windows.

I'm also looking for a good MP3 player. My ideal candidate would have an FM radio (with decent reception) and be as tiny as possible. Rechargeable batteries (a cradle like a plam would be perfect).
I don't care about the price as long as it's under $500.
I don't think this ideal player exists, but I'm still looking.

This is just an aside, but a friend that just got the Sony NetMD for like ~$130 said he was using it while in the kitchen and dropped it in a bowl of water. He had the headphones on at that time and it was still working while under water. He took it out, let it drip dry, found the display didn't work for a few hours, then it was back in action. They must be able to take a licking and keep on ticking...err...reading. :)

Very nice. But I wonder how long it would take to transfer 512 Megs of music with USB 1.1 esp when it says the max rate is 6+Mbps.

I have the 128MB Muvo. It's a very nice unit. The things that I like about it: it's as small as you can find in an MP3 player and is very light; it's perfect for jogging, working out, etc.; the sound quality is very good and the volume is impressive for such a small unit running off of one AAA battery; the USB stick makes it easy to transfer files and I can store more than just MP3s on the unit. Now, the things that I wish it had: FM tuner, LCD display so that I can tell what track is playing (this makes navigation among the songs difficult, but usually I load up full albums anyway, so I generally listen to them straight through, so the lack of a display is not a major drawback for me).
Overall, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages for me. I would recommend it to anyone that is not looking for a unit with an FM tuner and for someone that does not really need an LCD display.
