i have a Gateway laptop with Composit Video out it has a S3 Video card running Win XP pro. and i need to lower the resolition to 640 x 480 and as low as i can make it go in XP is 800 x 600 when i had 98 this wasnt a problem but this higher resolution cuts off my screen.

Try going to http://www.s3graphics.com/index.html to see if you have the latest drivers available.

I dunno about yours, but on my laptop, my S3 graphics ONLY output to TV at 800x600.

Same way my Dell is. 800x600 is as low as I can go BOTH on tv out and the LCD.

when i had 98 on this laptop it would do 640 x 480 now i have XP on it and it will only go down ot 800x600 and my screen gets cut off now which is a hinderance now. any way to make it look better on screen?

ok moved back to 98 on POS Gateway Solo 5300 laptop. so i could bump resolution back to 640 x 480.
have new dell on the way with S-video Tv out will i have this same probelm of the screen not fitting on the TV and loosing the Top 1" or so of the screen and 3" l-r Side scrolling movenemt. Or is the Dell vid card better and will it work on my TV wuth Win XP

If it has an ATi graphics chip it shouldn't be a problem. They have always been known for good TV out. It may even output at 1024x768 but you usually can't read any text because a TV is too blurry.

the vid card will either be
64MB DDR NVIDIA_ GeForce4 MX™ Graphics Card with TV-Out
128mb DDR ATI Radeon™ 9700 TX Graphics Card with TV-Out and DVI
and i think it is the later of the two.
