There sure are a lot of them out there these days and tons of folks really get into these "games" so much it becomes a part of their lives. Heck sometimes playing one of these games has lead to getting hitched and sometimes death to those who tend to push it way to far! (Though those folks had other issues for sure!)

But what's the point in playing a game that never ends. Nothing to win or beat. No ending!

Where is the big pay off that comes from knowing you have won the game? I just don't get attraction to something that can't really end just tired of playing.

So let's hear from you gamers out there! It sounds like we got a big MMORPG crowd here so lets hear who likes these types of games and who doesn't and of course why.

:stupid:

Replace stupid with something nicer...

I'm too lazy to change it.

But then again, I like sports games. And sports games really have no end either. So I guess it's the same thing.

exactly.

I don't see the point in shellin' out ~20-30 bux and then paying another 10 bux additionally each month for the privledge to play their game. screw that.

I think how I end the game is by selling my account on ebay :P

Thats how you make the money from all the months you paid, and plus maybe perhaps some profit.... oh the joy of gaming

oh yea, think about it like this!...

$40 for the game
$10 a month for say 6 months

thats a total of 100...

I sold my Everquest account for 250...

you do the math:heh:

p.s. thats only one game, remember everquest? DAoC (to a friend who just started), UO, AC, and now SB

I've never seen the point of shelling out a fee to play a game you already have paid a ridiculous amount to get in the first place... until PlanetSide. I got in on the Beta of this game and I'm so damned addicted. Absolutely awesome. I highly recommend most anybody try it out for at least one month. I love it because if you try to go solo, you die. Plain and simple. It's a team based game, and if you work together, you can acheive most anything you set out to do. Sure, there will be some failures along the way, but heck, it builds character, doesnt it? :P

Second. I can't compete with the 12-year-olds that play the games from 4:00-10:00 each night.

On the other hand, I like the idea of practicing with clans in UT / Tribes, and I see some parallels between MMORPGs and clan games.

I hear ya all in regards to the monthly fee! Jeez! You buy the game, then you pay for internet already and you have to pay a monthly fee to play the game? Seems like a big rip off!

See, I'm willing to pay for a little while. That's how good this game is. It's not overtly impressive graphics wise, but it is rather nice. The enviroments are very well done. I'm probably one of the biggest opponents of pay-to-play games, but this one, and this one alone, seems to be worth it... as long as the monthly fee is $10 or less. If it goes over that, I'll probably pass. I do have some principles left!

Yeah, my big issue is that you keep having to pay for it. I mean $40-50 to start then $10 or more a month.. jeez just another bill.

But they can be fun... sometime tooo much fun. I have tried to shy away from games like that ever since I got addicted to UT and diablo. But diablo made me tons of money on ebay :)

Buuuuut I may have to try out Star Wars Galaxies

play, sell the account, its like a part time job.....

stop complaining and plaaaaay :)

as long as you have fun thats all that matters, its better than paying 10 bucks so your kid can play at chucky cheese or family fun center every month...

Ya.

I wonder how long it will be until "TKer" and "PKer" will end up in a movie/book...dictionary.

I'm currently playing Earth and Beyond by Westwood/EA Games. It's a sci-fi based MMORPG and one of the first out there in this genre. There are several in beta right now like EvE and Star Wars Galaxies. The graphics are superb in Earth and Beyond though it is still a little buggy. The game play is also very easy to learn and it's a lot of fun to play. The next couple of monthly patches will hopefully resolve most of the really annoying bugs that are still left. They have fixed many big issues such as lag and most of the crash-to-desktop problems. I have only been playing since November and the monthly charge is 12.99/month or you can buy 6 months for 9.99. The game CDs only cost 9.99 at Frys (with a free 30 day trial). This is my first MMORPG and I was in the beta (where I got hooked - you're right DF it's like CRACK). The storyline is very interesting and original - it's kept me very interested so far. EnB is a player-vs-environment type of game - there is little Player-vs-Player combat right now though they may expand on it in the future.

I'm in the EvE beta now too and they're trying to push it out now and it's far from ready. There are so many bugs in it I won't be staying on after the Beta is done.

It seems like a lot of MMORPGs are being pushed out with serious bugs because of the online game market and the need to be profitable. My advice for anyone thinking about getting into one is wait for a few months at least to see if the major problems are resolved yet before investing your money and time into a particular virtual universe.

If anyone here also plays Earth and Beyond, PM me - we might be on the same Galaxy (I'm on Galileo).

I've been thinking about earth and beyond-it does look cool.

I wish they had some sort of sliding fee scale. I couldn't play for more than 4-6 hours a week. But I am asked to pay the same amount as a 12-year-old that player 30 hours a week.

I've seen Earth and Beyond Online bundled with Command & Conquer Renegade, Freedom Force and Need for Speed III Hot Pursuit in the EA Gamers Pack for $19.90.

Star Craft...a true classic. And yeah, anytime I can play a game through b-net over anyone else the better!

I just got in on the next round of beta-testing for Star Wars: Galaxies. I know ProMinx has been testing it already. Anyone else?

And I still can't believe they make us pay shipping for testing the game for them. Greedy bastids! :P

I really love the idea behind MMO games, but I hate the concept of paying for them. Besides that, the games get really boring and repetitive eventually. SWG was fun for a while, and then I got bored after a few months...but once I was accepted to Planetside...I don't know if I have gone back into Star Wars Galaxies even once... Planetside plays the way any FPS should. Any Unreal/Quake (I'm not going to mention CS because that isn't a real game) fans should love this one. A persistent world of a few thousand first person shooters all hacking each other to bits...how can you go wrong?

ProMinx

PS - My list right no reads as AO, TSO (play test), SWG (beta 2&3), PS (beta), (and I've been accepted to the Rubies of Eventide beta...but haven't started playing yet). Beta testing MMO games rules because most of the time it is free.
