View Full Version : Is sleep a necessary part of your life or just a luxury?

For whatever reason I am annoyed by the fact that someone in my life is always tired. No matter how much she sleeps she is always tired and it drives me insane. Her response is always that she is working so much and keeping normal hours compared to me. So this begs the question, do you find sleep necessary or just a luxury? And if its necessary, how much sleep do you need?
Personally, sleep is necessary to a point but anything over that is just cake. With just 4 hours of sleep, I can function normally all day, but I might start to drag towards the end. At 6 hours of sleep I am optimal and never start to drag.
I used to be able to go full tilt for several days without sleep, but those days are gone. On the other ends of the spectrum is my friend who sleeps 2 hours/night maximimum...the rest of the time he is in the physics lab or teaching. Compare that with my friend who gets 12 hours of sleep, gets up for 3 hours and then wants to go back to sleep again. (And no, she isnt ill)

i think everyone needs varying amounts of sleep to feel good and function. it depends on the person. if someone is constantly tired and dragging and getting 6 - 8 hrs of sleep a night, m'be they need to get some excercise too, and get that metabolism purring. :)
sleep is definitely necessary, and getting too much of it is not a luxury. that actually makes you feel tired.

Actually they revise the amount of sleep adults need constantly. Just in the last year they have jumped for 8 to 6 to 7 to 5 back to 8 and last I head back to 6. It all depends on what study they look at.
Another interesting fact is that the older you get the less sleep you need. Think about your grandparents who get up at 4am for no reason other than they arent tired.

yeh but don't they get up that early 'cause they usually doze off once or twice during the day?
I hate lazy people too UF. I like to sleep at least 6 hours but if **** has to be done, **** has to be done. I guess some people really need more sleep or they're just lazy bums. Who knows.

Unfortunately, for me sleep is necessary AND has become a luxury. I'm lucky to get 6 hours on a weeknight, and by Thursday and Friday I'm feeling it. :o
I function perfectly fine on 5 hours of sleep. I start to drag about 15 mins before I go to bed though, but that isn't bad. I tend to force myself on 5 hours of sleep because any more than that and I want to sleep the rest of the day, and I don't like that feeling. So I normally go to bed at 2am pst and get up at 7am pst.

When i used to work on the NYSE I was commuting up from Philly everyday. I would go out and party with my friends until 1 or 2 in the morning and get up at 4:45 to catch my train. I would sleep the 1.5 hrs of the train ride but still it was only 5 hours maximum sleep and I was fine.
Throughout lawschool I was working selling electronics on my day off and weekends. I had to be there for opening which meant 8am or so....and I still went to sleep at the earliest at 2 am, mostly closer to 3 or 4. I then worked at 9 or 10 hours shift and went out that night.
So I guess I just dont get people who sleep 6 or 7 hours and then are still tired all the time. On top of that, as soon as the weekend comes around, she still wants to go to sleep at her normal time (12:00 - 1:00 am at the latest) and then wants to sleep until 12 or later. It just drives me insane

I CAN get by on 5-6 hours, but I need at least 9 hours to be fully refreshed. I can easily sleep 12+ hours though :)
I wish i could get by on less sleep though. I have friends who get up at the butt crack of dawn every single day no matter when they go to bed. I'm the other way around, no matter when i go to bed, i can't get up early. Of course if i have to i will but its painfull.

I love to sleep. But, it's definitely a luxury. Around test time, I get by fine on about 3-4 hours of sleep a day. Of course... when I have nothing to do, I spend more time asleep than awake. Love that fuzzy wake up feeling.

I need more sleeep now...
it's not a competition, so who really cares?
i mean, who is it hurting if someone gets more than 6 hours of sleep in a night? if they get more than 10 hours or so, then they can expect to be groggy and stuff again during their waking hours...unless they are catching up on sleep lost. but most ppl seem to be fine with between 6 and 10 hours of sleep, and it doesn't hurt me one bit :P

Here is my 2 cents:
Maybe your friend has some kind of sleeping disorder or some kind
of depression perhaps. Or just lately, your friend affected by something that even she/he cannot explain.......be patient....:)
