I live in Van Nuys (actually Valley Glen) and need to get either cable or DSL. Which one would you say is better for my area? My friend suggested RoadRunner, and I saw something on GotApex about WOW...so I'm really confused. Please help!

it really depends on how many cable modem users there are in your area. if you already have cable tv/digital tv, then i would say get cable modem so you can get discounted rates. i live in sherman oaks and was on pacbell/sbc/yahoo dsl. it sucked, to say the least. now i'm on adelphia cable and it is much better and more reliable.

Does anyone have DSL Extreme? It seems they've gotten pretty good reviews on dslreports.com. Also, do i need a static ip if I'm planning on using a router? Oh - and I don't have cable tv.

you don't need a static ip if you're using a router.

I like my cable modem service so far since it's faster than DSL I had before (DirecTV using SBC). With DSL, my connection dropped all the time and I hated it.

I was talking to a rep for DSL Extreme and he was telling me that I needed a static if I want to use DSL for 2 computers...is he just trying to get me to pay more??

did someone say DSL-EXTREME?!

I think i heard someone say DSL-EXTREME!
oh save us DSL-EXTREME man!

*fanfare*

I've been using dslextreme for about 2 years now. The times that I needed to call for support they were always really nice and prompt with their replies so browny points for them there.

My only gripe is that I got downgraded to a 768kbps plan because I can't stay synced with 1.5mbps. They say that my house phone wiring is old, who knows.

As far as using them for 2 computers, you can just buy a router that supports logins (pppoe?) and use a dynamic ip. I thought dsl-extreme only sells static though...

sho.gun, do u know if dsl extreme would be good in my area (van nuys)? which plan do you have? I was thinking about their "most popular plan" --$34.95 for dynamic ip 192-1500k/128k. I'm not very computer savvy so this is all kinda over my head. Would you say that's a good plan for me? I don't play any internet games, just surf and download stuff.

I have the 192-1500K/128K plan and paying $49/month. It seems to be the most popular plan and I dont see anything wrong with it. As for dynamic/static ip, dynamics are cheaper but you need to log on and stuff to go online. If that doesn't bother you then I don't see why you can't go for that solution instead of static ip.

a router will work with either a static or a dynamic ip. i had a dynamic ip in boston for 2 years and my router would automatically dial the pppoe.

Is it possible to use a router for a computer that's upstairs and one that's downstairs?

yes, you can either get a wireless router, which would be easier, or run cables from both computers to the router.

My friend has SBC DSL @ his house and it has dynamic IP along with PPPoE. I set it up flawlessly with the Belkin wireless router and USB wireless adapter. I set the router connection never expired and remembered the user/password.

i'm in sherman oaks (right next door to van nuys) and i had sbc dsl which turned into yahoo dsl... for a 2 month transition period the service sucked and the support was lacking. i've been up and running solidly now for a few months with no complaints so i think the issues are over. FYI, router with pppoe to make the connection.

Does anyone know anything about Adelphia and their high speed internet service (Cable). Are they good?

well howdy neighbor, i didn't realize you were around the corner, lilbigblue. :)

as far as adelphia cable goes, i've heard good things, but when i called for service before i got dsl, i was told my building was the only one in my area that did not qualify, as it had not been upgraded yet, so therefore... i dunno!

I don't know if it's good or not but it's the cheapest cable modem service in SoCal.

i'm using adelphia right now and sometimes i have to manually reconnect through my router setup. not a big deal. For the most part i can download at about 200kb/s and upload at about 60kb/s. not too shabby compared to the pacbell/yahoo/sbc dsl that i was using prior.

Well I decided to go with DSL extreme: $34.95 for dynamic ip 192-1500k/128k. I hope I made a good choice!
