is it possible to run a router so that it doesnt distribute ip addresses? i want to use a router that i have at school, but our network admins dont want us distributing more ips than the one that we're assigned.

Sure, just disable DHCP & NAT on the router. Of course, a simpler solution would be to just remove it altogether & use a switch, 'cuz in essence you're now just passing packets from the school's network to your PC.

If you have a switch built into the router & you're just using it to share the connection with multiple people (who have their own school-issued IPs), then that's essentially what you want to do - use the switch capabilities & disable the routing.

If you're thinking about buying a ROUTER for this purpose, DON'T! Just pick up a hub, cuz that's the functionality you are describing.

Is this about using a WIRELESS router as a bridge or a wired router. I've sometimes wondered myself since wireless routers are going for $40 and wireless bridges go for $80.

i just bought a cheap blekin 802.11b router from bestbuy for 50 bucks. I have an apple airport (my fiance has that right now and she lives on the other side of the state) that is normally my main AP.

I have that connected to my cable modem. this network is locked down with the basic 128bit WEP. Nothing to spectacular. then i connect my home network to this using a SMC router. it isolates my home network from my wifi network, so i am not to worried on intrusion.

I plan on using a bridge connection across my house to connect my Xbox to the the wireless network.

i am a watchguard certified consultant, so i can get a soho 6tc forewall for around 200 bucks. I will get this when i have the spare cash.
