View Full Version : Another Moving Question

Just to add to the other moving question.
I'm moving to a condo next month that's about 30 minutes away. I'm planning to do much of my own moving, but I cannot move my bed, computer desk, and various other things because I own a civic and it's three stories down from my apartment and three stories back up to my condo. I'm thinking about getting movers just for the big items, but it looks like it might cost $300 or so. Uhaul is probably not an option since I still need to move the bed up and down and the rental would be about the same. Is this the right way or is there other options.

Friends & family my friend. Use them. Love them. ;) (Heck, neighbors, too! Buy them a beer - or pizza or whatever - of their choice for their help.)
That's how we are doing it. :) Saves a ton of money. My dad is bringing his horse trailer up and we'll use it, my fil's pickup & their minivan plus our cars. :D

yeah, don't bother with getting movers.
i would assume that your bed can be torn apart to its component pieces, so it's not going to be that hard to move it up and down stairs if you have a friend or two to help you.
a one-day uhaul rental will probably cost around $20 or $30. pizza and beverages for your friends, $20-$30. you save yourself $250 :D

When I moved, it was about 45 minutes away. I had friends with pickup trucks and a Uhaul. Get a 2 wheel doly and you are good to go.
I bought my friends dinner at Claim Jumpers when I was done. It's a fairly nice restraunt. Make sure you have plenty of bottled water for your friends. And beer at the destination. They will work faster if they know the beer is all at the other end. ;)

Uhaul's tend to cost somewhere near $75/day when you rent local. Well actually it all depends on the mileage you'll put on it. I've done quite a bit of moving for the last two years or so, I had to drive a U-haul/Budget/Penske truck about 6 or seven times within that span.
Usually you just need two guys who are good at judging spaces to get the really big and odd shaped objects out of the house. I highly recommend you buy yourself a dolly if you plan on moving again in three years or so. Otherwise rent the dolly, you might even consider getting the appliance dolly which makes moving fridges really really easy.

i dunno. around here, the small size of uhauls (which would easily hold an apartment's worth of furniture) start at $19.95/day + mileage (i don't know what they charge for that).
it sounds like he might be putting 50 miles or so on it.....so i suppose if they charge $1/mile, that would add up to near $75, but $1/day seems pretty steep.

I moved in december less than 5 miles. My bill was a few hundred. The guy put down the wrong mileage. I don't see how I can go 400 miles in 5 hours. So I told them where I moved to and we just ballparked the mileage.
