well, i've made up my mind (although one could argue that my mind was made up all along). i'm going to Columbia.
it's where i really wanted to be, and it didn't make sense to give that up for a place where i didn't feel like i "fit" as well. plus i'm excited about living in NYC for (at least) the next three years.
thanks for all the advice everyone gave me over the past couple days. while it wasn't what made up my mind (like i said, i've been leaning toward Columbia ever since i visited there in March), it was nice to have the input of relatively unbiased observers who (sort of) know me yet aren't part of the situation.
so anyway, New York, New York! here i come!

Hey cool man. I'm planning to apply there in 2005 after my military sevice is over, so let me know how the neighborhood is. Keep us updated on the night life and campus scene.

Look me up. I work in Jersey/Manhattan (by Rock Center) and live on Long Island. Or, as we NY'ers say, "The Island".

Good call. Glad to see that you are going where you will be happiest. Please tell all the New Yorkers to stop moving out here. We already have enough!

Studying law at Columbia, following in the footsteps of Alexander Hamilton. Not a bad choice of Founder to follow.:D

I've always been a fan of Madison myself :D

It seems at times Madison choose to support some issues just to spite Hamilton and the Federalists rather than actually doing what he knew was right. It was Party first, country second for Madison, and thats a bit too modern for me.

What at 137th?
Everything I've heard about Columbia is that its a great school, not much of a campus to speak of, just NYC.

I believe you're talking about NYU. If I'm not mistaken, columbia actually has a clearly defined campus environment.

depends on whether you're on the east side or west side.
on the west, harlem doesn't start until 125. sounth of that is morningside heights, manhattan valley, and then the upper westside.
however, on the east side, harlem extends much further south.
i've been out in the middle of the night in those areas though and they seemed fine to me. nobody mugged me or anything :D

stan is right. columbia definitely has a defined campus area, and the central area of campus (the area around Low Library) is absolutely beautiful.
NYU, on the other hand, is just basically mixed in with the city.
granted, neither school has the kind of campus you're used to seeing in the midwest (i belive you're in kansas windsor, aren't you?). i mean, my undergrad campus was about 2 miles x 3 miles and had vast expanses of grass, trees, natural areas, etc.
