I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro on a hdd. When i boot from the XP cd, setup starts to run. In the beginning, the screen is all blue and at the bottom is says "Setup is loading files" and it goes through all these files. Near the end, the computer just automatically restarts, and it wont let me continue with the installation process. Anyone experience this or know how to fix it? Thanks.

Are you sure your hardware, the ram, hd, proc, ps, etc., are working right. Good idea to have 256mg+ ram.
After the files load its supposed to restart if I remember correctly. Been too long since the last install and I cant remember everything.
Df might have a better answer for ya.

Is it restarting at the screen that says it's loading windows at the bottom?...if you happen to catch anything before it does restart?
I had that problem once. It turned out one of my sticks of ram was bad. If you have multiple sticks of ram, leave only one in and see what the result is. Also, switch the stick around in different dimm slots as some slots are more picky than others. And finally, if you have a different brand of memory put that in by itself.

Bad memory is what caused it for me.

Yup, bad memory. I spent a few hours full of curse laden tirades and physical threats to my computer before ripping out harddrive motherboard, and finally figuring out the blasted memory was defective.

happened to me once when i was trying to clean install xp into a computer previously using 98. all the hardwares were good. all i did was to change the bios setting back to default and the problem was gone.

Is the HD scsi?? If so, you may need to choose the option for 3rd party scsi controller drivers during the beginning of the blue setup screen. Ibelieve it says press F7.

if it didnt find the HD controller it shouldnt have been able to copy files to the HD. but if you dont find problems with the Ram, you should next try stripping out any excess PCI cards. I had a problem with that once, with XP installer trying to load the wrong driver for some card. hth

Ah, the obvious. Yes do as the man says and hook up only what you need to make the computer function: HD, CD rom, Floppy, Ram, Vid card.
