Just kidding :P
I got a $1.00 McValue hamburger this evening and I was wondering what the turnover rate at fast food restaurants is. It must be high, because it has to be one of the worst retail service jobs that exists: Crummy pay, obnoxious demanding customers, fast pace and moody people that you have to work with.
Anybody know what the statistics are regarding the average length of employment there? One month, one week???

Okay, I've got two stories.

When I was in highschool, I had a friend that worked at a McDonald's. I went there one afternoon, gave her $3, and I got 2 twenty piece nuggets, 2 double quarter pounders, 2 large fries, 2 chicken fajitas, and 2 super-size drinks. Of course, this was for me and a friend to eat!

Recently, my friend told me that McDonald's is supposed to have a policy where they have to give away a certain amount of food per day. His brother tested this theory by going into a local McDonald's and simply asked for free food. They proceeded to hook him up with an extra value meal or something like that. Can you believe that?! I dare someone else to try it.... :)

I never worked in fast food, but my 1st job when I was 16 was bussing tables at Denny's. Man did that suck. Plus, back then, if you bussed, you also had to do dish duty. Eggs do not come off plates!

I also had to pull and wash the mats on the cooks line, empty the big thing of grease into the grease recycle container. Completely disgusting.

Well I guess it built character

I was told by a Taco Bell manager that if you call the 1-800 complaint # posted in each store you get a minimum of $35 in gift certificates. I've never had anything worth complaininf about. She also said to call the store because the store manager can give you more freebies than the corporate office will.

I am the product of the McDonalds system, if you can believe it. I worked there three summers in a row and actually, I enjoyed it. It was pretty cool as a first "real" job and since I loved me some McDonalds food anyways, the free grub was a nice bonus. Turnover was kind of fast, but I think it had to be more than a month atleast. I don't know about the free food quota that kevs mentioned but what the hell, give it a shot.

I enjoyed working at Mickey D's but I also enjoyed the military so I don't know if you want to take my word for it

I probably shouldn't admit this, but I worked at McD's for 4 years until I got married. I was a manager so it wasn't TOO bad.

I'm with you Kim! I was a manager for Mc D's for 5 years through the end of high school and after till I got into IT.

It was actually a pretty cool time and I enjoyed it.

As for turnover, there are two types of Mc Workers. The kind that make it past a month and stay longer term and the ones that don't.

Free food quota does not exist. There are actually very tight controls on what happens to food and when we inventory the store, we know exactly how much is missing. Stolen food cuts directly into managers bonus and is punished severely when caught.

On the other hand, when your order is screwed up, what you get is purely up to the manager. They'll either fix your order, or if the screw up was bad enough we'll give you coupons for free meals.

This totally varies store to store and company to company since most stores are franchise owned.

P.S.: Franchises usually have much higher quality than corporate owned stores! I worked for the corp and for a franchise and will attest that franchises have much higher standards and expectations than the corporation. In total, I worked in 21 stores and opened 12 of them as brand new stores (which is a nightmare).

I hung up my Arches in '94 when I went into IT.

If I may ask, how much do managers get in pay and how much do employees?

I know this is a bad comparison, but I've read a lot of complains about Best Buy employees and managers (www.bestbuysux.org or something)...so I'm just wondering...

It's been so long ago that I worked there, I don't remember at all what I made. I know that it wasn't much! Maybe $6ish/hour when I quit. That was 13 years ago.

I was making about $5 an hour till I got promoted to 2nd asst manager. Then I was making about $20k + quarterly bonus based on store performance.

Minimum wage for McWorkers here in Cali, although if you do well you can get bumped up 5 cents an hour after about 5 years or so ;)

By the way, you are all graced with the presence of "The Grillmaster" :heh:

Were you working "pc" (production caller) in the grill area?

That's the command station back there. Keep all the grunts in line and making big macs when they're supposed to so you don't run out!

According to Fast Food Nation the turnover at McD's is about 300%... so the average employee lasts about 4 months

Maybe I'm bad at math but coudl someoen explain how the turnover rate could be over 100%? Wouldnt that mean that 3 people quit for everyone that is hired?

I think that's over a year. So 100% turnover means that everyone leaves in a year. 300% turnover means that within a year, 3 people will leave per job, so Vectorcalculus is right, the average is about 4 months per employee.

So whats the difference between corporate and franchise owned businessed?

Well the first two years I was mostly a grunt, but because I was working at a McDonalds attached to a big shopping center, things were really fast paced and I became an expert with the spatula. By the third summer, I was giving orders ;)

Generally, if the corp feels there's an area that has too few stores and there aren't any franchises interested in opening up there, they will open their own stores just to have a presence. Usually, if the store does alright, they will eventually sell to a franchise.

The other case is when there are NO corporate stores in an area and only franchise owned stores, the franchises will have all of the power and don't have to participate in promotions that the corp wants to push. In this case, the corp will either buy back some stores in the area, or build new ones to create competition. The logic being that if the store down the block is participating in the buy one get one free promotion and the one up the block is not, all the business will go to the store that is. This will force the other stores to play along.

BTW, the slowest Mc D's I ever worked in made $1.5 million per year. The busiest, $4 Million. The franchise I worked for owned 22 stores and was owned by ONE guy!

14% of the current US workforce had their first job at McDonalds. That's one out of every seven workers. (Source: Jeopardy)
