Hello, I'm thinking about buying a DVD writer. I'm not sure what to get really..

I have old VHS recordings which I want to make into DVDs (I have already converted files and all that so just need to burn) and be able to play them on my pioneer dvd players. ( I have 2 pioneers and 1 panasonic dvd players) I don't mind just playing on my pioneer players but maybe I wish that the dvds I burn would play on virtually any dvds.

Also, I'd like to just burn files as backups.. pictures, documents..etc.

and... comes down to 2 choices I had in mind:

1. Pioneer DVR- A05 DVD RW drive

vs.

2. SONY DRU500A (but I was also told that there's a newer version of this drive.. does anyone know?)

so.. PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE WHICH ONE I SHOULD GET IT... IT'd be great if you could tell me where to get it as well.. much thanks yall

Save your money and get the a05. IMHO its a better drive despite not writting DVD+R. But if you have at least one I doubt you'd be really switching from different media. DVD-R media is cheaper and seems to be more readily availabe. Also is more compatible with the old dvd players out there.

Go for the DVR-A05 since it's cheaper and most DVD players play DVD-R. I got my Cendyne (rebadged Pionner) for $165.xx after tax and MIR.

What about the new TDK 420N Indi DVD vs Pioneer DVR A05?

What's the Cendyne one called exactly?

On the box, it says Cendyne 4X DVD-R but it's a rebadged Pioneer DVR-A05 (listed by WinXP).

Only get the Sony if you are worried about the different formats. While DVD +R is actually better - a little - for video, it still has pretty crappy compatibility compared to -R in regards to standalone DVD players.

Ya, the newer version is the DRU500AX. It is the 4x version.

That is the one I am getting soon. A co-worker has a friend that works for Sony. I'll be getting a retail one for $190.
