zenbooty got me thinking about this since in his post in this (http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=60705) thread he says:
So Time probably doesn't want to feed the fire anymore, and went with whitey on the cover.
If you are a Caucasion are you are you offended by being called "whitey"?
If you are an African American are you offended by being called "blackey"?

I'm personally offended by the word "*****" or any derrived word from that. However these youngin' of asian descent in high school seem to have no problems with it at all. So did I miss the boat on this being a "cool" term analogous to calling someone "nigga" in the African American community?
They tried this scenario in the tv show Boston Public I think last year. I accept and understand the arguement they gave when the term is used b/c it stirs up emotions or feelings of hatred. It was a very powerful couple episodes to watch.
Anyone else watch Boston Public and know what I'm talking about?

i don't find the term "whitey" offensive in the least.....but i don't find most "slurs" directed against white people to be personally offensive.
i think just throwing it around in casual conversation is similar to calling someone "blondie" or something.

....i think it's all a matter of context. or if someone i don't have an established relationship with used it in a derogatory way, i'd be offended. if i'm joking with any of my black, white, or (this is for you attgig) yellowy friends and one of them says it, no prob. i know they're just kidding around and there's no hate behind it.

I don't find "whitey" offensive, nor would I find any other racial slur directed toward white people to be offensive.
Racial slurs are much more than the simple act of saying a word. Those words carry with them the history of oppression, or discrimination, or injustice.
Whites pretty much have, for the most part, never felt real prejudice.
If I were to call someone a "n*****", I wouldn't just hit them with the word, I'd be hitting them with the full impact of the history of that word and the death, destruction and inequity associated with it.
In saying that word I am, in effect, saying that I agree with all those who have said it before me.
But I can't say I've ever heard the term "blackey" (except for our cat... that's his name.)
I'll call a white person any variety of terms.
If a AA, Latin, Asian, wtfever, person calls me one of the "racial slurs" they should be prepared to hear one called back at them. If they get offended, it's their fault for saying something first.

i know which episode you're talking about.
fortunately i'm surrounded by people who don't use those terms. i'm prety laid back, so if it was said in a joking manner, i'm not offended. i do get a bit worked up when i hear people use the word oriental tho. i don't know why, but i don't like that term.
btw, when i read the subject line i thought it was about the race tags marathon runners wear.

I don't think people calling me any word is derogatory. If someone calles me whitey, cracker, or white boy, I know that is because of the color of my skin and that is true. I think "what's the big deal, they are pointing out a fact." I figure they just don't know my name. It's not like they called me ****head. Now if they called me ****head, then I would just ask them why, most likely they are just trying to get a rise out of me. No need for hatred there, just ignore the fool.

I agree. I don't like Oriental at all. It's demeaning and makes you an object rather than a person. I feel the same way when girls call themselves China Dolls.

Asian is a vast term I agree. Oriental to me has a negative connotation and its use is more towards objects. To describe a group that excludes Russians the break down can be East Asian or Middle Eastern or East Indian. Yeah that's also general too. And it's difficult or not apparent to any single person to further break down to Japanese, Chinese, Korean etc. So that's a conundrum (sp?)
If you want to hear how it's demeaning you can always listen to Yellow Fever by Bloodhound Gang. They came to our campus for a concert and at that time promoted that Mammals song. But were boycotted by semi-large groups b/c of the Yellow fever song which is grossly demeaning.

ok. i want to figure out something. what's a racial slur for koreans? is "gook" for vietnamese? i remember hearing the actors in "forrest gump" calling the vietnamese "gooks" during the vietnam war scenes. but my korean friend says that "gook" is for koreans.

Gook -Vietnamese -Term most likely dates back to the
Philippine-American War (~1900) and has been used against a wide
range of peoples, usually Asians but occasionally Europeans and even
the English. Unknown origins, possibly "goo-goo," from the Tagalog
language (a major language spoken in the Philippines). Although many have it originating in Korea either by referring Korea's original name, "Hanguk", or during the Korean War when Koreans would ask American GI's "Mi Guk?" ("American?" in Korean) which sounded like they were saying "Me gook." Was soon adopted for use in the Vietnam War.

I don't consider ABC too offensive but that depends on the context and how it's being used. Sometimes it's asked as a question to see if you're born here or not. The other way it's used is to determine how "authentic" you are and that comes with some stereotypes like since your born here you can't speak chinese, have no idea what chinese culture is, blah blah --> borg --> assimilated. Depending on the person (or *******) you get rated as a second rate/class person.
Hmm...Don't forget the Eggs = White on outside and yellow on the inside. The PC version I guess of an Egg is asiaphile.

The problem is that it is difficult to offend white people on a racial basis. Most white people don't mainly identify themselves with being white, but rather with their current nationality or with their national decent. When someone with whom I am not on good terms tries to throw an ethnically derogative term my way, intending to offend...I won't be offended...but I'll be pissed just because I understand that is what they want, and I hate to disappoint. But if someone uses the term, "whitey", I might punch them for being an idiot. I hate that word because it is so boring, so uncreative, so ugly sounding. It makes the person who says it sound like a Clinton, Arkansas trailer trash.

That works really well too. I hate double standards. Don't slap me with an ethnic slur and not expect me to sling one back... Years back, one of my good friends saw me across one of the major quads of UCLA and yelled out "Hey Matt, you ethnic-cleansing aryan bastard!"...so I turned around, saw him and yelled "What is it, Ali, you hi-jacking camel-humper!" Half of the quad stared at us in disbelief, but we just walked toward each other and cracked up laughing. Ethnic slurs became our standard greetings for a few months (even ones that didn't fit, like calling my 100% Persian friend a "drunken river-dancing leprechaun") after that because we knew that we could roll with the punches and share a laugh.
