PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) -- Position Available: Interpreter, must be fluent in Klingon.

The language created for the "Star Trek" TV series and movies is one of about 55 needed by the office that treats mental health patients in metropolitan Multnomah County.

"We have to provide information in all the languages our clients speak," said Jerry Jelusich, a procurement specialist for the county Department of Human Services, which serves about 60,000 mental health clients.

Although created for works of fiction, Klingon was designed to have a consistent grammar, syntax and vocabulary.

And now Multnomah County research has found that many people -- and not just fans -- consider it a complete language.

"There are some cases where we've had mental health patients where this was all they would speak," said the county's purchasing administrator, Franna Hathaway.

County officials said that obligates them to respond with a Klingon-English interpreter, putting the language of starship Enterprise officer Worf and other Klingon characters on a par with common languages such as Russian and Vietnamese, and less common tongues including Dari and Tongan.

Qapla' That's an odd breed of psychotic. First, they had to have taken the time to learn Klingon, which many have done. Then they had to get loopy and develop a psychosis where they only speak foreign languages.

Hmm, question: What happens if the patient thinks he knows Klingon, but he's just making it up in his head? Then having a translator that actually speaks Klingon would be fairly pointless.

Follow up to my last post:

How do these places test for Klingon fluency? What if an applicant just says that he knows Klingon, and then tells the doctor, "Uh, sir. He doesn't know Klingon, he's just making it up."

There isn't like a fluency test out there, is there?

Well he/she could sit in front of all the episodes of Star Trek with Klingons and translate it. Then compare that to the script or something...

hopefully the script doesn't say "speak klingon here" or "asioghwoiuht3tho4wht4hwg;ehawgh4wagh4wagh34whg32aliuhgliwhgliuha"

I looked at a script once, and it said, "Insert Techno-Babble Here." Though I'm not sure, I suspect that it probably would be the same for the languages, though you never know.

I believe that Gene R. actually created the Klingon language, like wrote everything down. It was a response to the great response by fans to the Klingons, and once fans catch on to something, the writers have to be consistant with wording or the "Trekies" would get all over them. I don't know if that is a good thing, or just sad.

Here's another link. There's a link on the page that goes to the Klingon Langauge Database. So I guess they could always look it up on the net?

AH HAH! Another nerdy reference to Star Trek from revil. Always claims it's his 'friend' that knows so many things.

Yes, I still remember when you smacked me for the reference to the Temporal Prime Directive!

CLOSET TREKKIE!! You've been found out, now take a pic of your room and show us your movie posters and all the different versions of the USS Enterprise models hanging from your ceiling fan so they look like they're fliying !

(revenge of the nerds: Ogre) NERDS!

Hmm, I wonder if I'm no longer a Trekkie, since I no longer have any posters of the Enterprise and am having trouble watching all the episodes of Enterprise.

As for the Borg in last week's episode, I don't think they ever named themselves so it doesn't screw up the timeline of humans never having met "the Borg." The only plot hole that I found was that Captain Archer mentions that they might come back in the 24th century. If this were the case, don't you think that Starfleet would keep a record of it somewhere and try and prepare? Eh, of course TNG is over two-hundred years in the future, and I wouldn't be surprised if things get lost.

Of course, I look more and more like a nerd now...
