How much or how many percentage do you tip for dining in a regular restaurant for regular service? Nothing fancy like singing a birthday song.

It all depends on the service. A tip to me has to be earned they don't automatically get the 15%. If the waited is crappy then I won't leave anything at all. If they're just average i'll go with the 15% and if they're really good I try to leave a little more.

Generally, I try to tip around 20%...but it has to be earned. Keep my drinks topped, my food warm, and make sure I am happy...or you will suddenly have next to nothing.

I have been known to write Get another job in the tip area before.

Now compare that with someone I used to be friendly with who tipped on how hot the waitress was. His all time highest tip 210% at Outback steakhouse....his meal was $30 or so, he left $100!

I tend to tip 20% plus . . . only time I'll tip 15% or less (REALLY rare) is if the service sucked . . . I usually consider 15% the base amount . . .

We are talking about regular service here. :) I usually tip 10% and up to 15% if the service is fantastic.

I usually start with 10% if the service was just normal, nothing stellar, the waiter/ress didn't seem too interested in making me happy, or had just an ok attitude. If something was wrong, or the waiter/ress had a bad attitude, I usually leave a little less. If the waiter/ress was really sincere in their efforts (meal was good, came back to check twice or more,was cheery) then I will leave at least 15%, if not a little more.

20% is industry standard now, unless I get guff then its less, but its usually 20%.

I worked as a waiter in college, so I always try to tip around 20% for good service. I figger someone has to make up for the lame-o's that tip 10% or under or stiff ya!

Food service folks make bare bones on just salary - they depend on tips for their income, and the IRS taxes them on a % of sales regardless of whether people tip or not.

I usually start out with a 20% tip in mind and just go down from there... Took forever to get my drink, minus $1 etc.
Good = 20%
Decent = 15%
and it has to be bad to get 10%

I just double the tax.

Here's a tip on how to calculate your share of the bill when splitting with friends or coworkers. Take whatever the price of your meal, drinks whatever and add 25%. That'll be tips and tax. The way this works is that tax is like 8.25% + double tax for tips and that adds up to ~25%.

Btw 15% and 20% depends on the service.

Around 20-25%, but no less than $2.00 for small food, $1.00 for bars or coffee, $1.50 for cabs.

Why should 20% be the standard? I remember some a'hole server had already filled out my credit card receipt with 25% tip. I don't have a problem tipping 25%, but this guy SUCKED and was very presumptuous.

Sucks to hear that

20-25% if the service was exemplary....and those people do deserve it
15% if the service was decently good. Std. fare stuff
10% if service was poor. Bottom line. I will comment performance to a maanger if the person was just horrible.

1-2 dollars for fast food/lunch type places where the person recognizes me and I recognize the person.
0-1 if the person was nice
0 if i'm new there or I don't care.

Those of us enjoying higher city salaries can afford a couple more bucks for the service. So its what's customary here.

How much service did they provide?

If I saw the person take my order, and bring my food, and bring me my check, nothing

if they did more than that, I start at tax. If they do good, I double that. If they keep doing good, they get a dollar everytime i feel like it.

Since I go to school in the napa valley...I usually tip around double the Tax. which is about 7.5%. So double that will be 15% Easy as pie!!

I typically look at the sales tax on my bill, double it and then round up to the nearest dollar. Since the sales tax is 8.25% here, my servers are typically guaranteed 16.5% at least. If the service wasn't up to par, I'll usually round down.

Also, if the server gave us something or the management compenated us for something wrong with our meal, I always tip at the original cost of the food, not the result.
