LOS ANGELES, 9 May 2003 — A US Islamic group on Wednesday demanded an apology from the director of new comicbook movie “X2: X-Men United” for portraying the bad guy in the blockbuster as a Muslim.

Project Islamic HOPE, a Los Angeles-based Muslim civil rights group, said Jewish director Bryan Singer shot a close-up of the film’s villain wearing a ring with, “Allah,” the Arabic name for God inscribed on it.

“It’s a major slap in the face to Muslims worldwide that this portrayal be made when the “X-men” in the comics and movies have always fought against prejudice in society,” said the group’s director Najee Ali. “It was done intentionally,” he said. “It’s another case of Islamic phobia in Hollywood which has always demonized Arabs and Muslims, but after 9/11 we thought that American Jews and Muslims would work together for peace.” Ali said the scene, shown in the opening minutes of the film that took a whopping $85.5 million at the North American box office and $155.2 million worldwide in the three days after its opening on Friday, amounted to “anti-Islamic propaganda.”

He accused Singer of “engaging in a subtle campaign to breed intolerance and hate and demanded an apology from the director and asked its producers, the 20th Century Fox movie studios, to cut the scene when is released on DVD.

“In the meantime, we are not asking for people to boycott the movie in theaters as it will give them an opportunity to see Singer’s intolerance and prejudice,” Ali said.

Neither Singer nor executives at 20th Century Fox were immediately available for comment on the allegations.

Ali said Project Islamic HOPE was affiliated to the American Muslim Association that claims more than two million followers nationwide.

you go muslims....

you guys should start a new trend..
.force hollywood to submit letters of appologies along with every movie that has a bad guy in it... I'm still waiting for my letter of appology for a Korean guy being the bad guy in bloodsport. And how about a letter to germans for being the bad guy in die hard 1&3. Or a letter to the black brotha's for being the bad guy in .... hehe, well, a LOT of movies :P

Can any of you Xmen afficionados verify that this is consistent with the comic book if it was added by the director? If it was added, I would say the group has a point. If not and it is truly a part of the character, then they have no real grounds for complaint.

By the way, SNL said something in their "news" about Xmen having something like 42 flaws. Anyone know anything about that?

... well, if it "a subtle campaign to breed intolerance and hate", then it's apparently failed miserably, at least for me anyway.

1-i don't remember a ring, and from what i see on the forums and from chatting with my friens, it would seem most people don't remember it.

2-if i saw a ring, with that particular pattern on it, i would likely think something along the lines of "cool design", and that's about it. i doubt the few people who noticed the ring recognized it as Arabic, or saying Allah, except for maybe the person who was complaining!

btw, the white elderly people who've been in the military should be offended too, cuz *gasp* the villian is an older white gentleman who was in the military! or if you really wanna get offended, Magneto was Jewish! man, what horrible ideals X-men portrays! *snort*

this is just stupid, imho. :disa:

Well isn't the whole x-men mutant theme based on tolerance of other races or people that are different. Prof X wants peaceful co-existance and Magneto believes it to be impossible. Sooooo...the bigger message is just give peace a chance, yadda, yadda.

I was gonna go see it, but the local Klan meeting took all of the seats, they said they were really psyched about the opening scene.

moviemistakes.com (http://www.moviemistakes.com) mentions the reference on their website:

Yes, it's sad, but it impressed me. Apparently moviemistakes.com was the basis of a joke on Saturday Night Life on the 10th May: "Avid fans of the X-Men movie have already found more than 42 flaws in the new film... And yet they can't see the flaws in their own lives..." Well, if they don't get the appeal, that's not our problem...

They also have a list of mistakes (http://www.moviemistakes.com/film.php?filmid=3105) that is now up to 52. :)
