Next-generation consoles

Why are people still calling the Playstation 2, GameCube and XBOX "next-generation" consoles? Aren't they the current generation systems? :confused:

Seems a bit silly to me.

If they are they should stop being that companies like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo is using that term for their next systems coming in 2005-2006.

I think some folks just got use to using "next generation consoles" for these current systems because everyone was using the term for a few years before they came out.
