If you are having a date over for drinks and grilling on the deck what is an appropriate attire?

Last night I get grief because I was in my usual home attire;

nice pair of Jcrew boxers and a polo

Does anyone thing that's wrong?

Hmm, if it's your mother then its fine but if you're trying to get some, then you have to impress.

What separates us from animals, it takes us longer to impress the opposite sex and lull them into intercourse.

trojans :D

seriously, if it's at your place, just wear something casual like khakis and a shirt.... make sure you shave though.....

I think the boxers did you in. Maybe some long shorts or baggy jeans.

you had a date show up and you were only wearing boxers?

this doesn't strike me as a good idea. i would say some khaki shorts, some casual khakis, or nice jeans with a polo or a casual short-sleeve shirt (not a t-shirt).

But they are really nice boxers !

She has seen me in a nice suit > I can get dressed up but at home why not be comfortable?

I also didn't mention her reaction when she saw my new 5' X 8' mirror
in my bedroom.......looks totally cool but perhaps she got the wrong impression. She kinda rolled her eyes. It's not like it was on the ceiling or anything weard.

This statement alone indicates that we have a lot of work to do here. Never wear boxers on a date. Start at the bottom. Shoes - wear them. Don't wear ones that are beat up or more than two years old. Chicks always check the shoes. Remember that. Socks - wear them too. And don't wear white ones. Pretty much all others are okey. Pants - wear them :P . Like others have said khakis are good. For a bbq jeans also work if there are no holes, they fit reasonably well, and are clean. Clean is important! Me, I prefer linen but that may be a bit advanced here :bandit: Also wear a belt and make it one the same color as the shoes. Chicks notice details like that. I know, it is stupid but they do. as for a shirt - just about anything with a collar that is clean and pressed will work. When in doubt choose black, but for a bbq you can get away with just about anything. Shaving is good. Combing you hair is also good.

And I doubt the mirror hurt you too much.

speaking of getting a date in the laundromat...
yesterday in the grocery store i had a man really come onto me to the point where i wanted him to just get lost. it was friendly small talk at first about the item i was looking at to buy, and then he kept getting more and more personal with the conversation.
and guess what? i have NO IDEA what he was wearing, if his belt matched his shoes, if he was wearing khakis or jeans, if he had a t-shirt on or not. all i know is he wasn't standing there in just his boxers. :P

I think you would've been fine if you had ANYTHING on over your boxers...

i think merlin means "don't wear only boxers"....ie PUT SOMETHING ON OVER THEM!

I think this is entirely appropriate for a geek on a date - it's also 99.99999999999% guaranteed to scare the *&#! out anyone you're meeting for a date. :D

I guess the message I am receiving here is to dress up a bit when having a date over > in case some of you were wondering I do know how to dress and have a decent wardrobe.

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback both positive and otherwise. The point I was trying to make was why do I have to dress up in my own house.......I mean in a few hours I would have been down to the boxers anyway......why not just start off right? Again there are really nice boxers.

If you want to impress your date then you should dress properly,
even if you are in your house. If you do not care much about your date
then.....whatever you are wearing or the lack of should not be matter.
...my 1.5 cents
