Anyone else here grow orchids? Ever since I was younger, I have always liked them and as such, have had them around me. So a few years ago I bought my fiance an orchid for valentines day, and ever since then she has been gung ho about orchids too. At this point we have 15 or so....but there are about 45 or so around the house.
Today we went to Andy's Orchids ( www.andysorchids.com ). We picked up another four.
So anyone else into Orchids or am I alone in this interest.

Well while we were on the east coast we had cattelyas out the wazoo. But for some reason they dont do well out here. So rather than cats we have a lot of phalenopsis, cymbidiums, oncidiums, vandas, epidendrum and paphiodedilum (lady slippers). We picked up an encylcia and leptotes.

There's nothing wrong with a guy having a green thumb. Now, a brown thumb on the other hand... :2far:

Adaptation was a great movie. The scene where he talks about how the bee pollenates that Orchid is very poetic.

Those are some nice looking plants. Good health, nice leaves.
Are you using grow lights/ green house conditions or just sunlight and a south facing window.

from mid april to mid october they're outside. plenty of sun.
for the winter months i keep then in the basement. i have fluorescent fixtures with one grow and one soft white, it works pretty well. they continue to flower up until christmas, then recycle until i bring them back out.

some are - i think they are easy to grow....hard to flower.
for most you have to be really careful of your conditions and really patient. most of the ones i have only flower once a year.

My wife has about 30 of them all over the house :P
They take forever to flower, but when they do the flowers seem to last for a few weeks.

Ok, so I just watched Adaptation tonight....and if a dead man with no teeth can post on Got|Apex...well then, more power to him. But me, I am a living guy who doesnt like to kill endangered species..unless I am hanging out with Ted Nugent and protesting PETA, that is.

*dusting off some dirt* Well rather than starting a new thread, I resurrected my original thread from a while ago. One of our more interesting orchids, a hanging orchid - Stanhopea occulata just bloomed. Its an amazing looking orchid and even more amazing smelling. I walked outside and immediately new that it had bloomed since all I could think of was Mint Chocolate Chip icecream. Thats right...it smells like Mint Chocolate chip icecream.
