Well, after 9 months of contract employment, I finally secured a full-time job this morning. I traveled to Pittsburgh 2 weeks ago to interview for this job. Went well I thought and they said they'd let me know in two weeks.
I was offered (and accepted) a position with the FBI in Clarksburg, WV. It's your basic run of the mill networking job, just with the good 'ole FBI. It's very nice because they basically deal with any and all technologies out there. You name it, they've got it. So it affords me a great learning opportunity. It starts at 40k a year with health and welfare benefits, so I'm pretty happy. =)
It's a fairly big step for me, well ok, a 2700 mile step. But hell, I'm young, and having the FBI and a top-secret clearance on your resume can't hurt can it?
On a side note, anybody live in or near WV? I know just about jack squat about the area. Any help would be much appreciated.

Nice skiing area eastward. Cheap housing options I think. Be careful of girls with missing teeth, two heads and are the mother of all her siblings.

40k is a bit low for the job I think. Are you fresh out of school?
If so, then it's GREAT. But if you have more than a couple of years experience, it sounds cheap...

You can't really say that, as you don't really know what the job is. Plus, 40,000 in Pittsburgh is 100,000 in New York is 30,000 in Minnesota...I mean, it really depends what the cost of living in the area is.
Also, IT jobs just don't pay what they used to.
I worked on the NMCI project a while back and I got Civilian Classified Clearance (highest you can get as a civilian) and it was kinda cool.
so far, it has helped being on my resume.

congrats man!
i know the job market sucks balls right now, so snagging a position like that is excellent.
wv isn't a bad state, although i don't know anything about the clarksburg area. i mean, the stereotypes are true in many ways: there are a ton of rednecks and a fair share of people who are just plain stupid and obnoxious (the concentration of these people increases dramatically in wal-mart).
on the flip side, people are generally extremely nice, friendly, and open in a down-home sort of way. however, there are obviously some rural areas of the state that you want to stay away from (or so natives of the state tell me).
however, cost of living is hella cheap. it's a beautiful state and coming from oregon, i imagine you appreciate natural beauty and the out-doors, and wv has a lot of that. you have some of the best white-water rafting in the u.s., and decent skiing in the winter.
also, it looks like you're about half-way between charleston and morgantown, and between those two cities you'll get decent concerts and cultural events. charleston also have some excellent restaurants, and the state capitol is worth a visit.
most importantly, good luck on your job!

Ya, there is gonna be some minor league hockey withdrawls... Kind of a bitch to drive 2 hrs to see a game every time I get the urge... My local team (here in Oregon) has an internet video feed for home games and all the radio broadcasts are available as well, so it wont be so bad, but not nearly as nice as 36 dates a year of live WHL action!
say hi to fox and dana for me :D
