These drives are rebadged:

It's the luck of the draw. The lucky ones get the Lite Ons, I got an ASUS and love it.

Is this considered a decent burner? Is this also good for burning music?
What does Lite Ons, Asus, and BenQ mean?

LiteOn, Asus, and Benq are all OEM manufacturers. They all build various hardware for other name brands that rebadge the manufacturer product with their own brand name.

Spec say that this is an "internal only" burner. Can it be converted? If not, does anyone know of a great buy on an external burner?

Yeah. Stick it in an enclosure and your all set.

The LiteOns define themselves in the bios, when CDs are being identified.

If you look at the serial number on the outside of the box, it will start with LTR. If you see that, it's a lite on.

Lite-ons are good cd-rw's, but their not must haves. I've had a 32x Lite-on that would mysteriously disapear from device manager until rebooting, and a 48x Lite-on that has been failing write verification 30% of the time even when burning at on 24x and under spec'ed speed of cdr.

I got a Asus today in my order, was dissapointed.
Went to local OM, saw a LTR bought it and tommorrow will return the Asus model to OM.
My questions is the Staples Asus Cendyne was not shrink wrapped but sealed in a white box all around.
The OM LTR Cendyne model is shrink wrapped with the bottom of the box cut (you know the box showing).
When doing a swap and returning the Asus Cendyne model to OM, will there be a problem, or will they easily accept it? Also, should I swap the drives or just give OM the Asus Cendyne model sealed.
Thanks

Check the receipt and make sure that the serial number isn't printed on it. If not, I'd return the shrink wrapped one. If they ask questions, just play dumb.
BTW, I have the ASUS and am quite happy.

All the southern California zip codes I tried returned "Out of Stock". YMMV.

Mine are awesome. I won't buy another brand. They burn perfectly, even with wierd CDRWIN configurations. I did notice that they tend to identify sub-standard (quasi-generic) CDR media a shred lower in speed than the media is rated...which I think is a good idea.

I've been using my 52X Lite-On ever since it first came out. I just love it. Had a 32X Lite-On before that. :D
