i think the pronunciation involves phonemes that simply don't exist in english.

from what i can gather, it's basically kinda like "win", but with a hint of an "ng" at the beginning and a bit of a "y" in the middle of the short-i sound.

interesting linguistics factoid: if you haven't been exposed to a particular phoneme by the time you are about six months old, you begin to lose your ability to EVER hear or speak it accurately. which is why, for example, speakers of some asian languages, no matter how brilliant they are or how good their english is, will never be able to say anything but "engrish." their brains just won't accept that "ngl" sound.

its one syllable (all vietnamese words/names are) and the closest i can get it by typing it is: nguh-wihgn (say it faster so its not 2 syllables). but easiest way....just say "win"

I've always wondered myself how this name was pronounced. I know quite a few people with Nguyen as a last name, so this will be somewhat helpful. I just hope I never have to pronounce it in their presence. :P

"new-yen" is the way americans pronounce it. there's no such thing in vietnamese. nguyen is one syllable.
