I tried using the service today..this is awesome! I managed to get 20 gallons at $1.73 a gallon (in San Mateo) and 30 gallons at $1.72 a gallon (in Palo Alto). The people who live in the Bay area realize what a deal this is considering that the average gasoline price in the Bay area is around $1.90. This is not at the cheap gasoline stations either...they are at shells and exxons and 76s. thought i would pass the word along that priceline just started serving the bay area. http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/smile.gif

I just made my first deal on Priceline.
I got regular 87 for $1.35/gal. That's $.23 less than street price. Sunoco is not my favorite brand, but my old station wagon will do ok with it.
Most regular in my area, Bucks County PA, a suburb of Philly, is $1.60.

Yah, how do the cards work? Do they work at pay-at-the-pump stations, or do you have to run them like a credit card with the inside teller?

just a thought...
how is that 5 gallon limit going to work???
is based on every prepay transaction??? or per month...
so like I prepay 50 gallons, so I can go up to 55 paying what ever price I get...
and if I prepay 5 X 10 gallons, do I get 75 gallons? 5 X 10 + 5 X 5
like if I do them in intervals? 10 gals the first week + 4.5gal...
and then the second week order another 10 gals + 4.5 overboard...
and .... etc ???
has any one tried that??? Cuz that way you can still get more gallons out per month...without paying regular price AND the 1.50 service fee.... if you really really need that much gas ...

it's like prepaid gas. you buy the gas first and then when you're at the gas station, you just run your voyager card through the pump. it's really fast!

let say i prepaid for 10 gallons. When i fill my gas tank, does the pump automatic stop when it get to 10 gallons or i have to manually stop it?

87 at 1.34 at 76. I think this beats all of you. The trick is to select gas station that already have a lower price then the rest. Then you'll get a lower average cost and pick a price a lot lower.

You need to stop it yourself although you can go over by up to 4 or 5 gallons (it's in their FAQ, which you should read) without being charged the increased rate

i think it's 5 gallons over what you bought, so if you bought 10 gallons, it's up to 15 gallons and if you bought 50 gallons it's up to 55 gallons. you can buy up to 50 gallons every 10 days.

when posting info on gas deals, give your area and what the local price range of gas is going for .
it looks like a there is big variance of local prices around the country.
so, a price of $1.40 could be no deal in one place, and a real steal in another.
thanx

Wow!!! Just got my card the other day and saved a whopping .29 cents a gallon!!! Wooohooo! Here in Santa Barbara CA we get robbed for gas, it's nice to get a discount.
Gas at reg price was: 40 gallons @ $75.60
I paid $64 with the Priceline card for 40 gallons. Saving's of $11.60!!! Now that can add up!

what happen when you receive the card a few week later, and the price has dropped?
dont't you lose more money that way?
G_Sup
08-20-2000, 09:11 AM
Panda, you don't buy the gas UNTIL you have the card. So, you can't lose money if you haven't put any down in the first place. Once you get your card there will be a number on it which will activate your account.

Cheap gas is a rare thing... Even though $1.49 for gas doesn't sound cheap it is about $.20 cheaper than street price where I live... cool beans!

DRAT! This doesn't work in New Jersey! There are no self serve gas stations in NJ.

08-21-2000, 01:17 AM
yes i know that you don't buy the gas until you get the card. questions, you offer a bid of gas price when you get the card right, like the airline tix? so say you bid $1.70 and the offer was accepted. then can you get into a situation a couple weeks later when you get the card, and the price has gone below $1.70, then do they adjust the price according to the new price, or you are stuck at $1.70/gallon?
grappa

Folks,
You DO NOT lose money if the price of gas drops below your bid price! According to the user agreement (which you have to click "I Agree" to when you sign up), IF the price of gas goes below what you bid, you just let them know and they refund you the difference after you've pumped! So you never pay more.
The only way I could see you losing money is if
a) you didn't follow the rules and got your gas elsewhere, then tried using the card and incurred the pump-price of the gas + $1.50 processing fee, or
b) you sat on your card over 90 days and didn't let Priceline know you hadn't used it, and so subsequently lost ALL the gas you'd put on the card.
Unless I'm misunderstanding something (I can usually comprehend things I read pretty well, but everyone makes mistakes) it's not hard to use and it seems like a pretty good deal.

I prefer carclub.com for gas savings. They give you a refillable Master card Credit card. You have to add money to it and can use it like any other CC at gas stations. All (yes, ALL) gas purchases are 10% off. This is really helpful when u make long trips where you cannot use pre-paid priceline stuff. And there is no need of finding a particular gas station each time. Plus you can find the cheapest gas prices around and get 10% off on that. (Reimbursement of $500 Deductible is an added bonus )
