View Full Version : What was your hardest class in college?
MATH 4574: Vector and Complex Analysis.
They had us taking it our sophomore year as Electrical Engineering students, those masochists.

I've had a couple pretty hard ones, Discrete Mathematics in Program Analysis, Set Theory and Digital Logic Design have all been pretty tough

My hardest non-history classes was Geology.
My hardest history class was Age of the American Revolution. Sounds like it would be easy, but my professor required more writing than I've ever done for a single class plus the reading was much tougher than normal.

Mine probably had to be a EE class: Stochastic Systems Theory. It was similar to skiAtomic's class, b/c it involved a lot of vector mathmatics.

reading the sagas in the original language with normalized spelling the first semester, and then with the original spelling/syntax variations the second semester, as well as eddic and scaldic poetry, which is really hard because they leave words out to get a good meter and rhyme... spent at least 10 hours a week on those classes my sophomore year.
also by far my favorite class ever.
didn't do much for my forestry degree. of course, my forestry degree didn't do much for me... but the scandinavian class sure did... :P

Ahhh, vector calculus. I've done those proofs. :-) I thought they were fun. Also I'm in Ochem right now, what is the big deal???? You just learn the patterns: 1 bond means it ends with ane, 2 ene, 3 yne. Right now we are learning sn1,2 and E1,2 reactions. You guys got nothing. Now you want a hard class, come talk to me about Chem 131-133, Physical Chemistry (thermo, statistical mechanics, and quantum) It's not uncommon for a graduate to take the class as a refresher and get a C. Other than chem classes, I'd have to say Electromagnetism was reasonably tough. That's one class where you love the curve.

Whats Class?
My hardest under graduate class..thats a tough one. I honestly cant think of what it would have been. I hated Stats 3204 which was advanced core statistics part 2 (in otherwords Stats for Stats majors part 2). I was required to take it for my Psychology degree.
But then there was the history class with Geggus, which was hell because of the professor.
There were other classes such as physiological psychology which at first killed me, but then I dropped it only to retake it the next semester (same prof) and I kicked its collective arse. So I think that had to do with the course load I was taking at the time rather than the class itself.

For EE: definitely VLSI 'cause I'm taking it right now.
For CS: OS and Programming Language.
It was the first time for me to actually touch Linux and we had 4~5 kernel projects that prof offers absolutely no help and TA offers min helps. Google was my best friend!
Have to learn 5 languages, 2 major projects, 5 semi-large projects in 10 weeks for programming language. I'm sure the material itself isn't tough just not enough time to absord all the knowledge.
Database seems easy for me. I was doing research on that a few quarters back then.
Roni,
Totally agree. I never make the 8:00AM class. Unless it's the only time certain class offers, I would avoid anytime.

now after next year, i may have a different answer :heh:
multivariable calculus. LMFAO.

When I was an undergraduate, VLSI design was the most time-consuming. I thought is was relatively easy to do it just took a long time doing the design/modeling/testing. The second most time-consuming class would be the FPGA Design and Applications class I took in summer school 7 years ago (when FPGAs were just becoming popular).
As for most academically difficult class I took as an undergrad that would probably be Communications II. That one was a lot of theory. It only made sense in grad school when I took Communications Systems I & II where we looked at systems/circuit design for communications (lots and lots of PLLs!).

Yeah, the Schrodinger equation is definitely one that I hope to never have to use again in my life - especially in three dimensions. :shake:
And yeah, you're right Kevster, VLSI is not necessarily difficult in terms of understanding the material; it's just the most time consuming class in the world. Spending 300 hours on a project in one month is just unheard of outside of the workplace, especially when you have 3 other EE classes to worry about. :(

Who's taken Signals and Systems? It's the only class I'm taking this first 6-week session -- my advisor told me to drop the other 2 I had planned and only take Signals!! I know what she means now, pretty intense.
Also, anyone taken a class in Fourier Series? I'm looking to take it so I can get my math minor, fill a tech elective, and hopefully use what I learn in my other classes (is it very applicable? we're going to be learning some in Signals)

Yeah I took Signals and Systems my junior year. It was pretty tough, especially since my prof was from Turkey and had a really thick accent.
We touched on Fourier Series in one of my engr classes, but never spent too much time with them, thank goodness.

Yep, diff eq was much harder than multivariable.

Signals and Sytems wasn't too bad except for the fact that I had it at 8 am and attendance was required.
Mine's at 8am too! EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE WEEK. But for only 6 weeks :)
You guys really thought Diff EQ was harder than Multivariable? It may have been the approach or program at our school, but I thought it was really simple. Then again, I did get a B in it. (Grr)

The class I took in my 3rd year essentially covered this - it was called Linear Systems and dealt with controls mostly (I had to take a more advanced Controls class afterward). Lots and lots of Laplace and Fourier transforms. Oh Yeah - you just gotta love the time and frequency domains!

I took signals and systems a little over 2 years ago. It was a tough class for me but I survived with 3 other classes. You shall learn fourier transform and others in that class too. We as students were forced to memorize all the transform formula and our prof sucked so much, he got fired at the next quarter. All I can tell you is to practice lots of problems in that class. Good luck.

I guess discrete math is easy at my school or something cause i'm 9 weeks into it and i've cracked the book open only to use the identities, besides that i've been gliding through it.
I can't say i've ever had any classes that were difficult as far as understanding goes, but i've had many classes that just required a lot of work, and being the lazy mofo i am they really drove me crazy.

Yeah, I don't see why people are saying that discrete math is difficult. To me, it's the easiest math there is - well, outside of arithmetic and algebra.
