So...my new place has a dog in it and although he's not here most of the time, I'm afraid that my allergies will come back. I'm not feeling anything right now, but still I'm slightly concerned. Also, I'm concerned with ticks and stuff.

Is there some sort of spray or something that I can do to protect myself?

What do you mean, gear? Where in your new place?

well...I'm living in a basement of my friend's th. It's kinda cool, it's like a giant dorm room :D

My friend has this huge dog. Is there some sort of disinfectant or spray that gets rid of dog smell/dog fur/ticks/etc?

because my plans for buying a condo fell through at the last minute and this place is about $600 cheaper than my apartment...and he has a gf...

it's a finished basement and it's quite nice actually. It's about 320 square feet with my own bathroom, and other than not having a kitchen of my own, it's pretty much like my old apartment, just smaller.

Back on topic, yeah...any ideas? Every time I have an itch I think it's a tick or flea or something. I'm getting pretty paranoid. My friend vacuums a lot, but still...

Use Norelco to take care of all that fur.

Wow, you just stopped me in my tracks!

Hrrrumm.. cough..

OK, back on topic.. They do make powders/treatments for dogs that will dramatically cut down on dander etc... and will generally repel fleas. It was originally made for asthma sufferers. I can't remember what it's called though.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

There were a couple ideas on TP that discussed this a while back. Most suggested an air purifier - maybe that will help?

What kind of dog is it? That makes a difference depending on the amount of shedding/dander it produces and the appropriate grooming/care that might help.

Um...i forgot...but it has relatively short hair. Air purifiers might help...but what about fleas?

Do you know for a fact the dog has fleas? If so, then that should be handled by a vet who will recommend a flea treatment like frontline or something.

I don't know first-hand, cuz I've never had a flea problem, but you or your roommates should get a good vacuum and vacuum the place VERY frequently. Some folks do it almost every day.

Also, the dog should be brushed regularly and bathed or taken to a groomer occasionally. Be very careful not to overbathe (like every week or so) as that can actually dry the skin and cause more dander problems that it would solve.

I don't, but as i said above, I'm paranoid and I think that every itch is a flea...

Perhaps you should take some placebo's for that.

First, I'd ask your friend to make sure it doesn't have fleas.

Then if you are still worried, ask the vet if there is a powder you can sprinkle down on the carpet or something. I am sure there is. Then, vacuum lots. At least every other day. When you finish vacuuming, take the vacuum outside and throw out the bag. If you just throw it away inside, the fleas might get back out into the carpet.

Also, is the dog allowed down in the basement? If not, as long as you wash your clothes, bedding, yourself, and vacuum regularly, I doubt you will have any problems.

Shoot the dog.

Or you could kill the girlfriend and make it look like the dog did it somehow.

Either way the dog will be dead and gone because in option 2 your friend will probably shoot the dog. That one would be good if you don't like hurting dogs.

ya - you sound CONVINCED the dog has fleas....no spray or powder in the world will help. RELAX!!!!!! - if you're that concerned about the itching, take an allergy pill like claritin, and see if that helps

yeah...that sounds good. I should just vaccum a little more and relax...

Worst case scenario, you could put a flea collar on yourself just to see if it helps psychologically and stuff. :P

First go to any pet store and buy a flee comb ( has really small teeth )

Run it thru a few areas of the dog > if he/she has any flees you will see them on the comb.

Ticks are real bad here in DC area so the dog should be on frontline - a once a month flee/tick liquid that you apply to the dogs shoulders and back.

If there are flees in the house aready you would know......believe me you would know...... ( fingers crossed )

Vaccuum often and you can add a solution to the carpet which will kill dust mites, animal dander etc.

On the plus side this is probably a good way to accumulate a larged down payment when you are able to purchase.
