I have seen them mentioned, but I don't have a clue what they are. Is this a new geeky phenomenon?

I remember a big dance party held by a company (.com, of course) that was moving into a new huge office space. Almost none of the furniture was installed, so the place was a big empty floor. A bunch of people were holed up in the server/LAN room, chopping up lines of Ecstacy on the new, empty server and network racks. Does that count?
I thought you were joking!
My friends and I had them back in high school. Unfortunately, I had a full sized server case on wheels and a 19" CRT monitor, so I couldn't pick up anyone else to go to it because of trunk space in my old Integra ;)
Usually spent 2 hrs trying to get everyone working in the network, and the crappy 8 port switch we got overheated, so we cracked the casing open, slapped on a copper heatsink, and positioned a box fan over it :heh:

it's a big geek orgy really...you all go into a big room with your "units" (and there's always at least one compatibility issue) and you come out all fustrated, dirty, sweaty, and infected with some sort of virus that you don't know who gave it too you

One of my friends had his computer system (CPU, Monitor, keyboard, speakers, trackball, etc..) mounted to a dolly so he could take it from his room in the dorm to other people's rooms to game or to the front desk to play games while he worked. It was kind of funny but at the time it was perfect. I am jealous of the people at college now who have network ports in their rooms. Man, I don't think I would have ever graduated if I would have had one of those.:)

haha... I did the same.
upgraded my 486. Took out the 4 1MB sims and put in 4 4MB sims. I was moving smooth then. I think it was like $50 each stick.
Later, I got a 1GB drive when they first got out. It at a good discount from the store where the computer was purchased (had to buy a 14.4 modem for $90 as the comp didn't come with one). It was 1GB drive for like $279 after a big discount.

i will hafta dispute using the word "orgy" to describe it. if you are using it to mean massive amounts of sex. you see the reason for the LAN party in the first place is the guys there aren't getting off on anything but their computers. :P

Come on Nickel, some sexual words don't always have a sexual meaning.
or·gy ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ôrj)
n. pl. or·gies
1. A revel involving unrestrained indulgence, especially sexual activity.
2. Uncontrolled or immoderate indulgence in an activity: an orgy of spending. See Synonyms at binge.
3. A secret rite in the cults of ancient Greek or Roman deities, typically involving frenzied singing, dancing, drinking, and sexual activity.
I believe he was refering to definition 2.

hurrah for lan parties! :D
There's a lan party every 3 months hosted by a buddy of mine. ~10 people show up, and we're at our *thinks* .. 15th iteration already so everything goes nice and smooth. Setting up takes less than 10 mins, and we're up and running. Nice and small for a personal feel to it.
Additionally we hit Denny's on the Friday and bbq on the saturday .. TONS of meat to last us through Sunday and half of Monday.
Hurrah!
/me anxiously awaits next LAN Party :D

I gather that this is a newer phenomenon....because when I went to school, even the "nerds" would have real parties!
Then again, even when I graduated they had just started installing the ethernet but even then it was very limited. (A single connection in the front of the classroom so the Prof could go to his website was about as high tech as it got, and that was in my senior year - even in the dorms you had to use dial up and most people couldnt do that)
But still, I guess its no different from the sleepover Nintendo parties my friends and I had when we were younger..it just goes to another nerdy level.

We had regular parties too. And they were good, the cops always showed up at least a couple of times during every party. But, LAN parties were something "newer" b/c most people couldn't setup an inexpensive LAN until the early to mid 90s. At least nobody I knew could afford it until then.

Every LAN party I ever went to started out gaming but quickly devolved into a warez sharing fest. I guess you gotta do it with people that care more about teh games than the people I used to LAN with.

Hmm been always interested in checking out and playing against people at a lan party, but I just don't know enough people that are interested in that kind of stuff.

That is how they used to start off about 5-10 years ago but now that the internet is so accessible and that hi bandwith connections can be had by just about anyone that is a thing of the past.

i love going to them and i'm very un-nerdly. we get together at someone's business and play MOH or Battlefield 1942 all night. setup probs aren't usually a problem. i have a dell m50 so it's got a fairly large screen so i don't have to haul a case around. they only bad thing about them is my body takes a few days to recover from all of the chips, pop, and other crap i've inhaled for 20 straight hours.

Warez can be any kind of programs (games, OS, utils, etc..) but they are usually just utils.
