How many of you dim sum on a regular basis? I love it but usually don't have the time.
What's the one thing you need to eat when there?

edit for my booty: shrimp dumpling, spring roll (don't get it if it's a vegetarian spring roll! those are nasty!), and hmm...i dunno the english name for law mai guy. It's like rice with chicken all wrapped in a leaf.

Hey, a little help for us culturally ignorant barbarians, could you describe what the chinese named items are in English? It would be cool to be able to walk into a Chinatown joint and ask for ha gow and know I'm not about to get a pickled fish head or cow's mucous membrane or something :D .

no ha gow is the bomb... very safe... you're usually good with cha shia bow, ha gaw and shumai

if u havent tried Dim Sum I suggest you go out and try it. It might look groose to some of you but it is really good. Right Dim Sum People?

Cha Shu Bow = The white bun with sweet bbq pork inside.
Shu mai = Is a meat mixture wrapped in tofu skin **Tastey**.
Ha gow = Shrimp in a rice skin wrap (lack of a better term).
Luo Buo Gow = A fried Chinese Carrot cake (not sweet).
**** Ma Cho (Tsu Ma Cho) damn it just doesn't anglicize very well = Sesame Seed ball with sweet bean paste in the middle.
My Favorites
Daan Taat = Mini Egg Custards **YUM**
Hai Tsaan Fun = Shrimp wrapped in Chow Fun noodles. **AWESOME**

You just gave me a very bad flashback to when I was younger. My stepfather is sitting there with a cleaver taking off the claws from the chicken feet and then boils them in this bright yellow pot. To this day, I refuse to eat anything cooked in that pot.
I think he also used that when he made fish stomach soup.
As for Dim Sum - I dont eat it, but he gets Boiled Ducks Blood and the like. He orders everything in Chinese, so its always eat at your own risk.:puke:

Yeah... pigs blood, Tripe is ... mmmmmm tastey... but I stay away from the pigs blood nowadays.

No, in this case it was definitely fried ducks blood...although I think I said boiled before, but it was fried.

The following is in Cantonese:
Har Cheung Fun - Whole shrimps wrapped in steamed rice skin doused
in semi-sweet slightly salty soya sauce
Lor Mai Gai - Chicken and mushroom packed in glutinous rice wrapped
up in a palm leaf. (Steamed)
Jar Leung - Chinese donut (Yau Tiu) wrapped in steamed rice skin
doused in semi-sweet slightly salty soya sauce
Foong Chow - Steamed chicken feet in sweet and slightly spicy bean
sauce
Har Gao - Steamed shrimp dumplings
Siu Mai - Steamed pork dumplings
Ngow Chap - Boiled cow innards (stomach, tripe, etc) with
congealed pigs blood seasoned with lots of different
spices then stewed for hours. Best served with a side of
chilli oil.
and for desert
Daan Tat - Sweet egg custard served in a flakey pastry crust (aka
Egg Tarts)
Jeen Dui - Deep fried glutinous rice ball covered in sesame seed with
red bean paste in the middle
There's just so many things I love to eat. Oh, and one of my favourites which is hard to find here in L.A. is something I've only seen in HK. Steamed salted fish over rice. Oh so good.... mmmmmmm....

Maybe we should organize a GotApex dim sum trip for those of us in L.A., both Dim Sum veterans and newbies are welcome of course. =)

Well me and my gf go on a semi-regular basis. We go to one in VA where my gf has hookups and we just pay a large tip. I'm allergic to seafood but when we sit down we get automatically get a carafe of soda, steamed chinese broccoli, chow foon (for me) and mini egg custards.
We usually get these:
1. The seared/fried turnip-ish cake.
2. A pork/beef mix in steamed rice wrapper/crepe
3. steamed chicken and rice mix in leaf wrapper.
4. Pai Guut - steamed pork ribs bits.
5. Hok Gauh and Shu Mai - The standard shrimp and meat in steam skins.
My Chinese is horrible and basically non-existant. We also get a few other dishes. We never finish the other dishes we don't order but get regardless.

With all this delicious food... I wonder, what kind of TEA does everyone have with their Dim Sum? Usually I ask for a Jasmine/Chrysanthemum mixture of tea.

oh yeah, and Lui Sa Tong Yun - Sesame paste/ red bean paste in gelatinous skin. Boiled then drained and rolled in a mix of sesame seeds, crushed nuts and sugar... mmmm.. so good!

I think it's pronounced Go Fah cha in Canto but it's the Chrysanthemum one and I just dump all the rock sugar in or just drop one in my tea cup.

You'll probably end up picking the weekends that I'm NOT there (bastages!) so is there any interest for a similar outing in the Bay Area? :)

Yeah Go Fah <--- Chrysanthemum tea. It's a bright almost flourecent colored tea.

Jasmine tea (a definite must)
As for the food, I like pretty much everything unless it's green. My favs. are probably, the pork blood, and the beef tripe.
