I have been into tracing my family tree for about 2 years now. I have managed to trace once side of my family back to the early 1500's in England and Scandenavia.
I think some of the coolest stuff I've gotten are things like my Grandmothers Social Security application in her own handwriting from when she was 16 years old. You can request a copy using the Freedom of Information Act as long and the person is deceased.
I also got my other grand/great grandparents birth and death records. Those usually tell you who their parents were, addresses, and occupations as well as spouses.
It becomes a story in itself, since everytime you get a document about one relative, it gives you info on new ones you didn't know about before.
Is anyone else into Geneology?

my maternal grandmother is still alive and has done a great job of keeping records for us. her parents are French Canadian and her mother's last name was McIntosh. guess what my great gram's great uncle did as his claim to fame? here's a big red hint:

One branch of my family tree goes back to Switzerland in the 1700's, but that's as far as it goes. There has been a long-standing family rumor that the Swiss government owes us millions of dollars, yet no one has been able to produce the paperwork that proves it.

ours is kept in Korea... From what I understand it's 2 volumes now... pretty thick. I saw one of the books before it's like 3 inches thick

I recently found out that my relatives fought in the Revolutionary war & have been in the US since at least the early 1700s. We also have a rumor of some family treasure somewhere in the UK, where there's a town with my family name.

I haven't traced my tree, but I know of a couple ancestors of mine you'd be able to find in most American history books, as well as a well known poet.

Are you Maya Angelou's grandson? Ogden Nash's long-lost grand-nephew? ;)

My brother and I have done a decent job investigating the family tree. We had to get a lot of my grandparents' records in Ireland when we were getting our Irish citizenship (dual with the U.S.). On my Grandmother's side of the family (the McBrides and McHughs) in county Donegal there is a LOT of history - mainly fighting against the English. From that branch I had a great great great Uncle who was part of a group responsible for killing the Duke of Windsor.

I have a branch on my mothers side that came of the boat from Ireland several generations back. The Little family.

There are lots of people related to him. Apples weren't apparently the only thing he seeded :hihi:
